Draft Pick
|
Ok I'll bite and play devil's advocate. And I'll be completely up front about it as well, I'm an Oilers fan and like to read other fans opinions on the train wreck that is happening in Edmonton. It allows for some perspective after reading some of the kool-aid drinking homers on other boards.
A lot of posters on CP have absolutely shredded (most of it deservedly so) and made fun of some posters in other boards that make comparisons of the young Oiler players to some of the elite players in the league. Yet in the previous page on this thread, Monahan is compared to Ron Francis -the 2-time Stanley Cup winning Hall of Famer who is 4th all time in NHL points and second place in all time career assists. A little hypocritical don't you think?
Don't get me wrong, I think Monahan is a tremendous draft pick and player and will go on to be a key piece for the Flames going forward. But to compare Monahan to Francis at this early stage of his career is a bit of a stretch.

They are comparing style of play. Nobody is saying he will have the type of career that Ron Francis did.

Agreed. Big difference between Monny reminding people of Francis' style and Hall being the best LW in the NHL.

And...he is comparing what "a lot of posters on CP" have done to a mention or two that a couple posters made.
So yeah.

It really isn't, when you look at what's already there in his rookie season. Comparing Monahan to Francis or even someone like Toews/Kopitar/Bergeron. We're not pulling these comparables out of our asses either, these are legit what he looks to be developing into.
Competitive drive, hockey IQ, work ethic/coachability/professionalism, committed defensively. Also a certain nose for the net (he could tie Iggy's record still and he missed out on games this season) despite being originally labelled as more of a 2-way playmaker.
Flames fans have every right to have glowing expectations of Moneyhands' future.

Yes I read that and understand where you're coming from, but in my own personal opinion, Ron Francis' "style of play" also lead him to be one of the NHL's most elite 2 way players ever known.

This, much like other hockey forums are forums of opinions. This is the 'Unofficial Calgary Flames Fan Community Forum', I think it is perfectly normal to expect people here to make fun of everything Oilers. It is also perfectly normal for people here to be bias towards the Calgary Flames. It is also weird that you would consider the opinions of a few posters to represent my opinion, I don't think Monahan is of the ilk of Ron Francis, I believe him to be more like Messier.

I agree!
I guess I'm just disagreeing with the definition of "style of play" means to other people. In my opinion, there is only one Ron Francis, therefore he had his own style of play, and that lead him to be the 4th all time NHL point leader.

That's fair, perhaps it come off the wrong way, but I do realize a couple of CP posters do not represent all CP readers and users. Just remember too though for CP readers, that not all Oiler fans believe that Yakupov has the 2nd best shot in the NHL (I shook my head at this notion) or that we are all drinking the massive Oiler kool-aid....

I actually don't have a problem with Oiler fans being optimistic - at least I didn't. Tough to imagine someone feeling positive now.
But anyways fans are allowed to be excited, and take the full glass mindset.
What I have found more irritating in the last few years is the media treatment of the Oilers in the face of what can only be described at utter failure.
But the fans - I have no issue with them have renewed optimism each and every year. That's what being a fan is all about.

Who let an Oilers fan in here?
"Monahan won't be as good as Ron Francis."
Thanks, tips. Glad you made an account and signed in here just so you could enlighten us with that.
He's already better than Ryan Nugent Hopkins though, and that's good enough for me.

It was really his longevity that led to him being the 4th leading point getter. Monahan could have a 15 year career where he almost completely emulates Francis's numbers and not come close to his totals because Francis played 23 seasons.

Yeah, it's true, he won't be as good as the 4th all time highest scoring player.
He'll be as good as the 2nd all time highest scoring player.

Then you're either being purposefully obtuse, or you don't understand what that very simple phrase means.
No one said he's going to be Ron Francis. If they'd said that, your response saying 'there is only one Ron Francis' would be accurate. They said his style of play is reminiscent of Francis's. There are many intangibles that make up a player's style. Many players share the same intangibles, and in turn, are compared for that very reason. Sorry, but your chiming in reeks of being a butt-hurt Oiler fan looking for a reason to lash out. A style comparison just isn't a jumping off point for that.

Sean's defensive zone play is progressing really nicely especially toward the end of the season. Good on Hartley to put his trust in the youngster on PK situations too. Last night he was deployed mostly in the defensive zone (40% offensive starts) and still had one of the highest CF% (45.8%) and CF rel% (+13.2%).
