Two bikes...

Top one is a Trek Hybrid which I ride for recreation in nice weather.

Bottom one is a Marin Drake's Beach Cruiser which I ride pretty much daily throughout the year, tooling about the neighbourhood for groceries and to go to the pool six times a week. February is the only month I didn't ride it. Big fat wheels on it.

Have really gotten into cycling the last few years. Lost a lot of weight and am generally more active now.

The tricross has braze-ons, so you can add a rack and panniers - a big deal if you want to take stuff with you and don't want to wear a back pack. It also looks more versatile for going off the beaten path. But you may be able to sub out the tires on the secteur for cross tires, which should allow it to offroad a bit too. If you're keeping either bike strictly on the road, consider adding some touring tires for durability.

The big difference for me would be the braze-ons. If you don't need to worry about those, I'd go with whichever feels better.

Thanks for your thoughts Flylock. I'm leaning more to the Secteur as it just felt more comefortable. My goal is to stick to roads as I already have a cheaper bike that I can use to tool around (or my wife can use). I might look at getting just another cheap bike for a ride through the village type so that my wife and I can go riding together. The braze-ons just don't do anything for me as I'm looking for more of a road bike to do with my extended family (they do the gran fando's and whatnot)

I've lost a bolt for my Shimano cleats

Does anybody know where to get a replacement bolt? MEC doesn't have any.

Are we around the dates to be looking for bike sales?

I'll be looking for a mid-level hybrid or a 29er maybe. Looking forward to biking to work and feeling better in the day.

Have you tried your LBS.......this is something you should have two of anyways.....

I think you may actually be a just a little late on all the great sales, but there should still be some out there.

I beleive that across from MEC there is a road bike shop, and then there is the bike shop - i'd think one of thsoe places would stock the bolt for the cleat.

have you looked at just buying a new set of cleats - which used to have the bolts?

I called a few stores, those bolts are not usually sold separately and they usually only have a few if they are leftover parts or returns or scrap pieces they have lying around. I can buy them on ebay if I need to.

I went cycling yesterday and felt one foot getting loose and almost lost another one again. They keep coming loose. Must be the threads in the shoes are not very good. Maybe I should apply some loctite?

Is there a good map of all the downtown bicycle lanes as they currently stand? The city of Calgary has this PDF brochure that's really hard to read. I've been using Google maps and spotting the little bike symbol drawn on the roads from the satellite view.

Not sure if this will help you, but I use http://www.ridethecity.com/calgary when planning my bike trips since you can choose routes based on either safety or directness.

Google maps also has a bicycling layer in the options where you can look at the current traffic.

buy new cleats, keep the old cleat and bolts as a spare - carry one cleat and two bolts with you in your seat bag (make sure you have the appropriate multi-tool to tighten thses bad boys).

once you ahve installed the news cleats and tightened them down, check them before each ride for a few days - if they are still coming loose, then applyy some of the non-permanent loctite (I can't recall what color it is)

Can you post a picture of the cleat bolt you need. I think I have a few extras, but it will depend on what style of cleat they are for. Are they road or mountain cleats? I use mountain clip-ins for my commuter. Shimano 520's, and that is what my cleats and bolts will fit.

I'm looking for an SPD shoe recommendation. I've never worn clipless before but I am training to do a 200k ride in a couple of months and I'm being told the difference will be massive.

I doubt I'll do a ride of this magnitude again (I'm not really much of a rider to begin with) so I'm looking for something that will be decent for this long ride, and be versatile for commuting/walking in the future.

Go into a bike store and try a bunch of shoes on. Your foot length and width will determine what works best. I have narrow feet, with high arches, and I find Specialized shoes fit me perfectly.
