Man sentenced to 2 years for Stampede threat
Am I the only one troubled that this wasn't made public in the first place? That seems like a pretty big threat and honestly if I would have known about it I probably wouldn't have attended the Stampede.

“There is going to be a machine gun attack at the Calgary Stampede this year,” he wrote.
“Two MG-53s rated at 1,800 rpm.
“There will be over 1,000+ casualties.”
The judge also said the fact Deegan had the capability to carry out the threat, because he owned firearms which could cause such carnage, was a serious aggravating factor.

If I had to guess, there are a lot of threats that are not made public.
I certainly know there are more threats at an airport than the public ever finds out about.
Whether one agrees with the reasoning (don't want to create panic?) I don't find it particularly surprising.

Well, this certainly sheds new light on "Have you been to the Stampede yet?"

Lol, the guy owns 2 rifles, which the article mentions were "illegally stored", but not illegally owned, and the judge says he can "carry out the carnage" of over 1000 people. He owns a rifle, not a cruise missile.
Yeah, good luck with that. What a pile.
I'm not disputing the sentence or stability of the person, rather the implication that owning guns can cause carnage equivalent of a WMD.

Well the threat wasn't only "1000" deaths". It was also "there will be a machine gun attack at the stampede".

How did you leave out the best part? He wasn't actually serious (or so he claims), he justed wanted people to know more about what he's really interested in: 9/11 conspiracy theories. Yes, because threatening the Stampede is a surefire way to invigorate people into believing in 9/11 conspiracies.

Well, if he did in fact own two semi automatic Mg-53's they, along with many other semi automatic rifles are easy to convert to automatic with a little research and a few parts or alterations. If he fired those into a large crowd at the stampede it safe to assume that there would be mass fatalities. I agree it's not on the same scale as a nuclear warhead or other WMD's, however it would still be devastating.

The MG 53 is a belt fed fully automatic machine gun. I don't think you can even get a semi-automatic version. I would feel quite safe in saying there is a 0% chance he owned one.
Marstar is the only dealer that sells it in Canada that I can find and they sell it full auto (prohib class).

Well, I'm fairly certain that it could be converted to semi-auto. How can they sell prohibited weapons?

Is it a given that they took all this guy's guns away? And that he won't be allowed to own them anymore when he does get out?
I'm sure a couple years in the cooler aren't going to make this a happier, more stable person. I hope they just don't cut him loose when he gets out.

They can sell them to people with Prohibited licenses. Which are nearly impossible to get unless you were grandfathered (owned a similar class legally) or in law enforcement.
