Safeway Sells Canadian Operations to Sobey's

Save-On just opened a new store in Calgary last weekend. They have stores either open or opening soon in Panorama, Seton, and Walden (which are apparently now the names of places in Calgary).


There are a few Safeway and Sobey's locations that are very close to each other that I could see them selling off after the merger is complete (32nd Ave NE, almost across the street from each other; Riverbend/Ogden off 18th St on either side of Glenmore).

For the 32nd Ave locations, I could see either Co-op or Save-on being interested in buying one of those locations. They're both good size stores and far enough away from their other locations that they wouldn't be cannibalizing their own business.

The Ogden Safeway is one of the older smaller stores, so it could be sub-divided and/or taken over by a store like Shoppers Drug Mart, like a few of the other older Safeway stores have been.

Co-op is shifting the market they are targetting, going after the upmarket Whole Foods wannabe clientele.

Doubt the 32nd ave area cares more about non cage raised chicken vs paying 7% less for the chicken itself. Can't see this being a co-op anytime soon.

Hmm, makes no sense for that Saskatoon Safeway on 8th and Circle to close, it's the only supermarket in that shopping area, while just down the street 3kms there's a Sobey's and a Safeway across the street from each other on 8th. You would think they would need to sell that Safeway instead.

There's a Sobey's less than a kilometer away at McKercher from the Safeway they want to close.

Effective Friday, April 4, 2014, Safeway shoppers will no longer require a club card to receive discounts on their grocery purchases.
According to Safeway officials, all shoppers will receive sales prices without providing a club card or a phone number.
Additional information on the end of Safeway’s club card program will be available at Safeway locations beginning on Friday.
The Air Miles Reward Program will not be impacted by the elimination of the club cards.

I don't have anything against Safeway even though they're more expensive, but their $1000000 prize marketing was a total scam.

Hopefully they don't get rid of the 5 cent discount at the Safeway gas stations (which in the past required a Safeway card). If they do I will go elsewhere

You can get up to 11 cents per shopping visit. The discount will be on the back of your receipt.

According to their Facebook post:

In regards to Fuel:
When you spend $35 on eligible groceries in a single
transaction you can earn 5 cents off per litre on your
next fuel purchase at a Safeway gas bar. Your fuel reward
coupon will print on your grocery receipt, and that
receipt can be redeemed in the fuel kiosk at a Safeway
gas bar for your discount. Simply present your receipt
with the fuel reward to the fuel attendant before you
pay for your fuel purchase.

So now you have to keep your receipt and take it into the attendant in order to redeem your gas discount.

Also, I wonder what happens to 10% Tuesday. I do all my shopping for the month on 10% Tuesday since it was a significant savings. Is that the next thing to be discontinued?

I hope so. I hate wandering into a Safeway on a Tuesday forgetting it's the first Tuesday of that month and having my normally peaceful Safeway experience ruined by a lowbrow hectic Superstore like atmosphere.
