Do I think it's a good idea to have 50,000 guns loose? Well, no, not when you frame it like that.
Persons entrusted with firearms in the defence of their country should be allowed to carry (ie not on the loose) on their military base, yes. Even contractors who would have to go through a screening process should be allowed to carry as well.
It's not probably every base in the US, it IS every base. Why would you say they are gun free "for good reason", in light of this being the second shooting at fort hood, as well as the Washington navel yard shooting among others?

"House Homeland Security Chair Michael McCaul tells CNN, based on briefings he received, 4 killed, including shooter, in Ft. Hood shooting."
One report said as many as 14 wounded.

Seven years walking around Canadian and US bases I never felt like I needed to be armed.

I know some people think it is but Texas isn't really a war zone, soldiers aren't cops, they are trained to kill the enemy not keep the peace.

I agree, and you shouldn't. However with that being said how did this nutjob and the previous one get in there?

The same way most American school, mall and office shootings happen: lax gun control, a mentally ill society and support for lobby groups that basically cheer the needless deaths of thousands of innocent people because it means they can push the "need" for more guns that kill thousands more.

Lazy, hollow argument Res, and if anything you may have handed the debate to them with your "mentally ill society".
If men and women, who are being trained to defend their country cannot defend themselves, something is wrong. It leads one to think they are not a defensive force but an offensive one. That actually fits the current world geopolitical activities better considering all the interventions they have been instigated on foreign soil.
If men and women in society cannot defend themselves, these situations will happen wherever the weakest link is, and that currently is gun free zones.
Maybe in the future at some point we will have all bought into the non-aggression principle and it will no longer be an issue, but until then self defense is a basic instinct.

Via the front door (or gate).
Security is not is tight as you might think on most bases.

Not surprising, being as it happened in a country that has no problems giving guns to people with mental illnesses.

Who cares? It's the culture in America. Don't Americans see it? Don't they see the poverty? The gun control problems? The mental illnesses? The health care problems for millions? They all add up and make people feel hopeless. This stuff rarely happens in Canada because our society isn't broken.

It happens more in Canada than it used to though. The gun culture is starting to seep through (and is also being imported from other countries through immigration).
As far as gun violence is concerned, Canada is in the middle of the pack and isn't a shining example to the rest of the world. The U.S. is still way in the lead though and has gun violence levels equal to some countries with actual civil unrest and active wars.

Don't you think that if men and women on a military base all need to armed to defend themselves, something else is wrong?

A military base in the US is the weakest link?

LOL. From where? Other backward countries like Mexico and some foreign countries where they have dictators? America isn't as bad as those places congrats but still one messed up place.
And it's the ignorance of Americans to their problems that truly make me sad.
