Yeah you could have used this season to have more flash forwards and tell more of the 17 years that we don't get to see it would have been better.
I am the type that is instantly filling in those 17 years with what I think is logically happening, I was able to take Ted's little monologue about how much he loved and cared for the mother and stretch that out, and that is probably why I liked the ending.
Funny thing is I came to the exact same conclusion after writing that post.
Over the course of the show she:
Broke Ted's heart- twice
Ruined Ted's relationship with Victoria
Cheated on Kevin
Promised to break up with Kevin for Barney, but doesn't, even though Barney ended his relationship
Slept with her ex's best friend, then married him, then divorced him
Put her career ahead of everyone including said husband
Never supported her friends, and bailed on them for long periods of time
Robin really was a bitch.
What do you expect from a die hard Canucks fan?

I would have had the mother dying around the time Ted's telling the story. She's on her death bed or just passed.
The final scene is the gang at MacLaren's having the drink they were having with that horrid "do you know what happened in this bar? Lots of stuff" line. But have them all recommit to each other, that they meet at their booth once a month, or on the anniversary of Ted's wedding or some milestone.
Ted and Robin ending up together is horrible. The show was about Ted searching for true love, which he found with Tracy (evidence by them giving Travy all Ted's lines in the flash forwards). Ted couldn't do it alone, so he had his friends. His friends are his family. Really that's what the show was truly about friends becoming family. Yes they grow apart, and change but your family is still always there. Having Ted end up with Robin just misses the point.
As for Barney just changing back. His heart was destroyed, he said so himself. He reverted back to not caring anymore because of Robin. I totally buy that.
If my wife left me in a similar circumstance I'd be dead inside too, revert back to a comfort zone and lose empathy.
It was a sad ending, but appropriate (until Ted runs off with Robin).

Minor quibble, and I felt the same way about the LOST finale, too.... after you deliver the emotional gut-punch of the ending, DON'T RUN COMMERCIALS OVER THE END CREDITS. Just let it breathe a bit.
As others have mentioned here, I think if they had developed the Ted/Tracy relationship more thoroughly throughout the season, her death would have had a larger impact. I honestly felt nothing as we hadn't had time to really see the relationship that had formed. It also doesn't help that they glossed over it with "..oh, she's sick", next scene, and the almost uncaring attitude of the daughter. I think there would have been a greater emotional response had it been Robin who died.
The episodes leading up to the finale showed how Ted had moved on from Robin, and in contrast, we saw that the mother had also let go of her love that same weekend. That helped strengthen their relationship as they were both ready to move on and meet each other. By bringing the Ted/Robin thing back in (which was clearly the plan from 2005), it destroyed all that development they had established between Ted and Robin.
I just didn't get why Ted would get back together with Robin after being with his perfect match. As mentioned before, Robin's a terrible person. I think that's the part that bothered me the most.

I even thought the writers did a good job to demonstrate that Ted's true love was the mother. Having him end up with Robin is a cop out.
Even with the blue French horn. He would have been so beyond that having met Tracy that it would have been an after thought if a thought at all in 2030

Though don't forget it was immediately after he told all those stories to the kids.
The show showed us that things constantly change and nothing is forever, nor perfect, and #### happens. And we have to make the best out of bad situations. That was shown again and again. And Robin distancing herself half way through the episode wasn't cause she became some horrible person, it's cause she was genuinely upset at letting Ted go and seeing him end up with someone else (similar to Ted deciding to move away with Robin settling down with Barney). But the mother understood she was important to Ted, hence dragging her back for the wedding. As for the ending, the mother herself had to eventually move on from the death of someone she then perceived as the love of her life. So, as important as she was to Ted, doesn't he deserve to move on as well after 6 years? The children thought so. And if it was to be with anyone, it makes sense that it's with Robin, seeing as they had lingering feelings through the years despite everything. I don't understand why it's so "bad", when we were clearly shown the importance of learning to love again even after the passing of someone, as an entire episode earlier in the season was dedicated to this theme. People are percieving this jumping to Robin as something that happened immediately after the mother, and was a dishonour to her memory, but it was 6 years later, folks. Keep that in mind.

It was also 5 minutes later in the show. As realistic the possibility may be, it's also a television show. If you don't show the viewer why it makes total sense that Ted would date Robin again, and instead show mostly the opposite for several years, people aren't going to like it.
Yeah, it was 6 years later. Ted had 6 years to move on, the audience had a couple minutes.

I doubt there is anything they could have done to leave you with a satisfying ending.

Literally as simple as not having Ted end up with Robin.
Everything else could've been exactly the same, but end it right after the mother dies, and I'm satisfied. No Robin with dogs and Ted with a blue horn, and I'm good. Is it easier for you to think of me as unreasonable? Because I don't think I'm saying anything ridiculous.

For me, you are right. They lit this pile of tires on fire 4ish seasons ago. I mean I guess they could have avoided pouring gasoline on it last night, but there was no putting this disaster out.
I would have been completely satisfied if this was the ending to the whole series. It's a great series and I thought this was how it was going to end given that the name is "How I Met Your Mother"

This is exactly what I was going to post. I saw this earlier today and it was just so flawlessly done, I think I'm going to just pretend that this was actually the ending of the series.
This would've been the best way to wrap things up, it fits perfectly with the entire series, not just the first three seasons. Just because you shot that footage with the kids 9 years ago doesn't mean you had to use it.
I didn't think it was possible to make a series finale worse than Dexter's.
It sounds like someone didn't catch the finale of Weeds.
If you had a problem with events coming out of nowhere in the How I Met Your Mother time jumps, you really don't want to see what happens to the Botwin family.
Ok ... so I stopped watching this show at like season 4, but let me get this straight.
He refers to Robin as "aunt Robin" in the story he's been telling the kids all these years, but at the time of telling the story they're actually together?
but at the time of telling the story they're actually together?
No, at the time of telling the story he's still in love with her/in love with her again, and the kids then convince him to go ask her out after hearing the story.
