For instance say the 10th overall selection next year is every bit as good as the player taken 5th this year, then why not wait since the Islanders are probably going to be a bottom ten team. Then add in the fact that McDavid (and possibly Eichel) could be a generational talent, then there is good reason why they might think a top ten pick in 2015 is better than the 5th pick this year.

This year they have had their best player and a top 5 guy in the league out for half the year which is unlikely to happen again. They have had about as bad goaltending that you can get. They have dealt Vanek and Moulson and their defense is going to get a year older and for most of those guys that should be huge. It seems unlikely they will be a bottom 5 team again especially with the amount of teams that may be willing to be bad as well this coming season. Ryan Strome is also going to be a year older and on the team next year.
Throw in the the optics of telling your team/fans that you are throwing in the towel, because if you give away a top 5 pick they better do everything they can to finish bottom 3 at least, and it seems like a horrible idea.
They would have to take steps to set the team back because giving up a top 5 pick this year only to get the 10th pick would be awful. Finishing anywhere above 10th would be horrible.
It would be a mind blowing decision for them to say hey we have sucked for the past 10 years and finally have pieces to move forward but we are going to do our best to really, really suck next year because bottom 5 isn't good enough.
I am not kidding when I say if they do that the league should look at revoking the move and taking away the team because on and off the ice it would be a horrible, horrible decision.
