ya, I guess after reading the description of the award Stajan would have been a good candidate as well. Oh well.
I wonder who decides this from the Flames Org? Burke, the coaches or the players vote maybe?

Burke chimes in:

And the emotion the Calgary Flames president of hockey operations and interim GM thought of first when asked about his team’s captain from those days to now may startle you.
“I feel pretty stupid,” Burke said. “I watched him play and I never walked out a junior rink saying, ‘I need to get this guy on my team.’ What Mark Giordano has done is make a whole bunch of management people like me look foolish, and good for him.
“I’m really glad for him, and it’s not just how well he’s played. He has been a quintessential captain in my mind.”

Should have been Stajan imo, but Gio is a good choice as well.
Moore probably wins anyway

Even though he only played the first half of the season, Josh Harding would be my choice. What he did was quite the story for a while there.

Good choice, but I also thought that Stajan could have also been chosen.
I think Josh Harding is going to get it this year though.

Thought of him, but don't think any player can win it twice. Or at least I don't think it's ever happened

According to TSN's news stories on the subject over the past few days, only one team had a Masterton nominee around the league, let alone Canada, worth devoting any time too, and that was Ranger on the out-of-the-playoffs Leafs.
Shocking I know.

And Ranger as a nominee is hilarious. They are proposing to give an award for dedication and perseverance to a player who literally quit on his former team. That is not exactly a Josh Harding level comeback.
Gio, of course, won't win. They rarely give the award out to guys nominated for general awesomeness anymore. But as the local nominee, he is a mighty fine choice. Stajan or McGrattan would have also been great nominees.

Didn't Ranger have crippling social anxiety or some other mental illness?

All he says is "personal reasons". I always took that to mean he just lost interest in the game - which is fine, but not a Masterton calibre reason for a comeback when he rediscovered the passion. If there was more there, cool, but it would be nice to know if he ever feels up to revealing it.
