While I think it's somewhat debatable to call Ramo a starter, if you consider him one then getting rid of Rene Bourque's contract and getting a legit NHL starting goalie for a 2nd round pick is a good deal. Calling it a "only saving grace" is underselling the value of a legit starter.

But that's only if you consider Ramo a legit starter... a status I wouldn't assign to him (Yet).

I agree that getting a legit starting goalie for a second round pick is a good trade however there are two reasons why in this circumstance it was not. First it wasn't just any second round pick, it turned out to be the 36th overall pick in a deep draft. Secondly, at the time Ramo was no where near worth ever a low second round pick. Montreal acquired his rights for an undrafted goalie, what would Calgary have had to give up for him on his own? You could even think of it as two trades, Bourque and a second for Cammy and Ramo for Patrick Holland.

It was pretty much just luck that Ramo was enticed to sign in Calgary and has looked like he has the potential to be a starter. It is for this reason only that the trade seems okay for the Flames, however it could have turned into an amazing trade if Cammalleri was not lost for nothing.

I'd say its an OK deal. At the time, Bernier would have been the most obvious guy to acquire and he went for a 2nd and change.

To the east. Asking price to the west was likely higher

I think I mentioned it before but would it be considered cap circumvention if we had a deal in place with a contender to sign/retain salary and trade a FA? Basically buying a pick

I agree with what you said except the part that it was just luck that Ramo signed with Calgary. It was more or less a caculated gamble by Feaster given his history with Ramo.

It would be a grey area, but it appears the league frowns on buying picks.

Burke tried to buy a 4th round pick by trading for an injured Kolzig. The league found a way to make the Leafs forfeit that pick.

I thought the pick was forfieted (and a fine) because the Leafs signed Jonas Frogren to an invalid signing bonus?

That was the reason the league gave, but considering:
  • the contract was signed for more than a year
  • all contracts are inspected by the league when they are first registered and nobody batted an eye
  • when the league forfeits a pick they usually forfeit the teams own pick, not a pick they acquired otherwise

it is pretty much believed that the league was looking for a reason to make Toronto give up that pick, because they couldn't find standing to block the trade otherwise.

Did the Leafs have their own 4th that year? If so, was it roughly the same spot as the forfeited pick?

Thats too many years unfortunately. There will be more than a few wingers coming up through the system in that time. And a retirement contract like that I cannot see being in the Flames' plans.

Is there any contender that would offer him that?

To Edmonton it is. Burke should ask for their 2015 first as a start for negotiating rights.
