"Toronto Terror Plot Foiled" CNN News
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/americ...ror/index.html
"This group took steps to acquire three tons of ammonium nitrate and other components necessary to create explosive devices," said Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Mike McDonell in a statement.
"To put this in context, the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City that killed 168 people took one ton of ammonium nitrate."
Wow. I wonder what the target was????

The scary thing is that out of the 17 arrested 5 are young offenders and at least 10 in the low 20's. This islamic movement is really getting to the younger generation.

Other then the fact these people or obviously misguided, disenfranchised and a little crazy why would they attack Canada?
In my mind it would only encourage Canadian support for participation in middle eastern military campaigns. Unless that is what these 'terrorists' want? lol...

I wouldn't call terrorism an Islamic movement

Get them while they are young, impressionable, and susceptable to hate. Mold them as you wish through an education filled with half truths and lies, and they will turn into the soldiers you need.

Involvement in Afghanistan? Don't forget that the international boundary drawn up by the west does not necessarily impact the thought processes of these radicals. Canada could be viewed as fighting Islam along side the United States. That leaves Canada open for attack in some minds I am sure.

I think that Canada should put a moratorium on Middle Eastern immigration for a while. Or maybe just impose major restrictions on who gets in (doctors etc. only). While this may seem overly insular and protectionist I think it's necessary for the next while. Although tightening the borders wouldn't do anything to solve the problem that already exists internally, it would decrease the number of new converts to this insidious thinking.

Because it is probably seen as a soft target.

My bad I should have said islamic extremists. Apologize to lumping them all into one group. The extremists are a minor minority of that religion.

... but possibly, create new converts from within, angry with the new position.

The thing about some that have been arrested is that they are second generation. The home grown terrorist is kind of scary. That is what I find disturbing about this because out of the 17 arrested all but 3 are 2 or younger with 5 being young offenders (I'm guessing 17 or 16).
It's one thing to over protect your borders to try to prevent something but when they come from within there really isn't much you can do. You alomst have to be lucky to catch these guy by hoping they do something really obvious to garner the attention from authorities.

extreme Islamists is the term that I think best fits the terrorists. Islamist is one who follows a political ideology that uses select aspects of Islam for its own gain. Muslims are those who follow the religion of Islam.
Just like the Christian Right in the states shouldn't be called Christian at all (honestly, with so much hatred in them, how they pull off the idea they are Christians amazes me). Instead, they should be called Christianists, as they too follow a political ideology that selects aspects of a religion to use for its own gain.
The recent religious sourced ideologies are pretty damn scary and annoying.

My question is, who is getting to these kids? Are they being brainwashed within Canada? At their mosques? You would think most of these kids went to public schools, did things like most Canadian youth, so where did the extremist influence come from? I think that's the real concern.
And Ive said it before, the biggest change has to come from within the Muslim community. If they are genuinely embarrassed by something like this, they should be reporting illegal activity, and fighting to take back their religion from extremists.

I think these guys should be deported. If they were immigrants or their parents were, they should be deported. I personally think they should be executed but our lib-lefty friends in Ontario would never allow that. If these peoples parents were immigrants they should be deported also.

I didn't know anything about this specifically until reading the article Tron posted, but I'd read a couple things about what was expected or what could happen in the next few days. What with the 6/6/6 reference coming up in only 3 more days. Maybe something does still happen or maybe not. Maybe this was going to be one of them?
