Heh, funny enough, I thanked Fotze's post because I thought it was funny, but then later retracted for use of the word "fag". I agree, and I know what he was trying to say, (i.e. that's something you would say in the 50s, along with "what kind of man goes grocery shopping") but I thought to myself "would I thank that if he had dropped the N-bomb....probably not".

Anyway, TLDR, I agree.

I'm all for banning words that originated as a label for people of any minority, but let's just chill. That word is all about context. It's use as a derogatory word is just some dumb Americanism. Should they ban the word "poof" too? Just any real word that has a derogatory slang meaning somewhere in the world? Can you imagine if "poof" was gone? How would people over dramatically state someone's exit?

There's no such thing as "hostile terms". Words cannot be hostile. It's their use that dictates the hostility.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a craving for a bit of fag(got)s and mash. Probably shouldn't eat them so late, but I read somewhere else that overweight people live longer so I best pack on the pounds.

In the context it was used, it was OK. Last time this came up I PM'd a couple of our gay members, and they agreed that in a context where it was showing that intolerance has no place in society any more, it is acceptable.

If any gay member feels differently, please feel free to report the post or PM me. Knowing what some of my gay friends had to endure (especially years ago), I am sympathetic and so not want any member of our forum to be made to feel uncomfortable.

I didn't even know I was gay until I heard that it's feminine to purchase food at a grocery store. Now that I am aware of my sexuality, I'm allowed to use the fag word.

I totally agree with the perspective that the word should simply be removed from the lexicon entirely. It's no different than if any other inherent personal characteristic were reappropriated and used as a pejorative term. In that sense it's arguably worse than "n####r".

I thing the British use of the word where it is a cigarette or its other slang uses is okay. Where it is used in reference to sexuality or used to attack something by associating it with sexuality it shouldnt be used.

I would say the way 4x4 used it is mildly offensive because even being sarcastic and the point of the post was to show the sexism of the original post it still used 'fag' to insinuate someone (himself) being less of a man because of their sexuality. Therefore it is offensive.

Fotzes post continued this to exagerated effect but even in sarcasm using 'fag' to mean less of a man is offensive.
