LOL, where are all the KoolAid drinking CPers claiming "Phaneuf will win threeveteen Norris trophies!! He's just young, Defensemen don't mature until they're 46!!11!!111!"
What a frikkin overpaid plug he turned out to be. It's going to go down as one of the worst contracts in NHL history, and Sutter is looking more and more like a genius for unloading that flat footed pylon.

I get a 0.4% chance of all 4 western teams and 2 of the 3 eastern teams not making it

The trade still sucked ass. We could've gotten way more.

At this point in time, I would take Stajan straight up for Phaneuf. What very, very few tools Phaneuf has, are completely negated by his totally grating personality, and IQ of a cinder block.
It is no surprise he lead the Leafs right into the toilet. This is the guy half this board was christening as our 'next captain'. Thank god Sutter got him outta here.

The trade isn't at this point in time though. So it doesn't really matter that Phaneuf's ability to play hockey nose dived. The secrecy of it was bad, and the desired return was bad. Just a bad bad trade.

I completely get what you are saying, but the more time goes by, the easier it is to swallow. Say we landed one big fish with Dion, and that guy moved on and signed somewhere else a year or two later... would we be any worse off now?
Stajan has ended up a very good 2 way player, that is part of the glue of the team, and will be around for years to come.
Phaneuf has completely proven he is not a leader in Toronto, and the fan base pretty much despises the guy. But hey... he can sure do a damn fine job cranking the volume knob to 11 on the dressing room ghetto blaster! What a champ!
We could have done way worse.

I think you made an error in your math.
Edmonton is no good.
Vancouver is no good.
And (despite the thread being locked), Winnipeg is no good.
So the odds are actually much higher than 0.4%.

Tor: 62 / 26 / 28 / 8 / 60 / 18 / 164 / 207 / -43
Cal: 62 / 26 / 31 / 5 / 57 / 20 / 147 / 175 / -28
Not a lot to choose from. Considering the Leafs are in the east, maybe even advantage: Flames

Yeah, I definitely agree with that. It's been easier to take as time goes by.
