^No. The Flames may still announce something in 3-4 months.

I like a smaller version of Friends Arena in Sweden for the Stamps. A little smaller and a bigger roof opening.

I would hope for a MUCH larger roof opening. That feels like Texas Stadium. Something like SafeCo with a cover, not necessarily a roof, would be better.

Oh, and you guys have bad taste in football!

Spoiler!

I know that this is a pipe dream, but there would be so many advantages to a retractable roof in this climate. The field itself could be used year-round for various amateur sports, not to mention large concerts without the limitations of seasons, weather, or noise, plus trade shows. Renting it out to local sports groups won't pay the bills, obviously, but concerts would certainly help.

Dare to dream, Arnold. Dare to dream.

That's awesome, and I don't even think you would need to change capacity or the roof opening, both are fine imo.

Expensive as hell though. 300 million Euro 5 years ago. Is that a Sweden thing?

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I'd like a higher capacity Liberty Stadium. This thing was built on the cheap.

Are you thinking just because the price is low? Because there's absolutely nothing inspiring or neat about it. It's a small, low budget stadium.

I would sincerely hope in a city like Calgary, with the way we are building ourselves into a world class city, structure after structure, that the Stamps are aiming much higher than a tin-roofed, low budget stadium with a few thousand more seats.

Personally, I'd like something similar to the football stadium in Seattle. Maybe a slightly scaled down version of it.

It has the perfect ambiance, imo. Keeps the fans really close, so if you only have 35000 fans for an event (stamps), it doesn't "feel" like 20000 seats are empty.

Or in Calgary's case, with a scaled down version of this. We could have a max capacity of 40-45k for the Stamps, and then the lower bowls and end seats without the upper tiers would be 20-25k, and would allow us provide a decent venue for soccer, and also allow for various outdoor concert set-ups that would create a cool experience.

Haha, awesome. Yeah, I guess that would be great fro Calgary as well. The only change I'd want (and I realize it might not be in the cards with our budget) is to have maybe something similar to size as that Winnipeg stadium, but with a retractable roof.

CenturyLink in Seattle is 67,000k with a retractable roof

Investor's Group Field in Winnipeg is 32, 400 with a kind of cheap, tacky looking roof on either side.

I would love to meet in the middle;

45, 000 Capacity, retractable roof, RED seats. That would be ****ing amazing!

So basically this, only all red seats, a little bigger and a nice state of the art retractable roof, and that would be a nice world class facility for our city.

Winnipeg's is nice for a CFL stadium, but still very "small" city feeling to it (which is fine, because they are), I think we should aim higher. And by all insider accounts it appears as though we are!

Safeco field (Mariners) has the retractable roof, Centurylink doesn't.

Interesting. Okay I'll change my wishlist to desire the style of roof that CetruryLink has, as it looks nice and modern and not tacky and cheap like in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg actually wanted to do a retractable roof but couldn't because MTS Centre had signed a 20-year no-compete clause with the city.

I would guess this is the closest one that's in operation right now to what you want. Toyota Stadium in Toyota Japan, 45,000 seat retractable roof stadium, with a roof that is very similar in looks to CenturyLink, with an accordion retractable roof added in the middle. Also even includes red seats!

Spoiler!

Want! Although after seeing what 45,000 seats looks like I think 37-40k might be better for Calgary.

If I'm not mistaken, the Tokyo example is covered, but not fully enclosed. That would diminish the usefulness in Calgary's climate because it is often the rain/snow in Calgary that's the problem, but the temperature.

But I like the idea. Seal it off fully and I wouldn't have any complaints about that one for Calgary.

Yeah, no point for a retractable roof. As we all know the temperature is the issue, so may as well spend the money to enclose it, or leave it wide open (blocking the north end off as much as to prevent that winter wind from blowing through).

As for Winnipeg, looks really odd from the picture. What's the point for all the beams on the roof? Just to make it look more advanced the it is on the inside? A huge gap between the roof and the seats, on both sides...like its missing a section of stands (future expansion?), and then the far end looks again like they just ran out of funds or ideas to do something of interest there (seats or otherwise).

And then the event floor, as if again they ran out of ideas or money when it came to the area around the field level....odd shaped and not a lot of sideline room, and then a bunch of grey concrete that looks like like an unfinished parkade (as really the whole thing looks unfinished).

I trust whatever is built in Calgary, assuming an outdoor stadium is part of the complex we're arguing about, will be a little less of a forced/cost cut industrial type design.

I'll step in to defend Winnipeg's stadium (I'm not from Winnipeg nor do I cheer for their teams, I happen to like the stadium). That is an old picture from one of the very first events before everything was finished. First, the sidelines are kind of tight in order to bring the fans closer to the field. I think that is an excellent idea and something that really good stadiums employ. The concrete wall around the field now has specialized Winnipeg Blue Bomber wall coverings on it. It looks very slick as it is all gold with the Bomber logo on it. No concrete shows anymore. I like the wavy roof and the giant arches holding it. It does look a little clunky (could have been more refined) but it stands out and has a "big time" feel to it. I do agree that the gap between the top row and the roof should be closed in. Gloass panels or a translucent film (see BC place) with LED's would be super slick. The endzones have a patio gathering area above the seats that leave room for temporary expansion seats (Grey Cups). These areas always seem full and popular when I watch games on TV. I like how the stadium is completely enclosed with seats. While there are a few flaws with the stadium, overall I think it is gorgeous. With some minor tweaks over the years it could become a true beauty.

Do they have to be linked? I don't support it for the arena, I'm more ok with it for the Stadium.
