Don't forget that we essentially got Smid in return for Horak as well. I honestly can't believe we may have won that deal. I thought for sure Tom would become a top 3-4 dman in the league. He still might of course, but perhaps more likely he'll be playing in Sweden in two years.

Yeah, I didn't even include Horak's 82 games played and 18 points with the Flames. Plus, Smid is a frickin' beast out there.

I think you have to keep both Wideman and Butler for next season, in light of the cap situation, and for depth. I agree that Wotherspoon playing at this level makes Butler expendable, but having a surplus of depth and cap-space to contain it is never a bad thing.
This creates a very good problem to have after next year, though. If the Flames have seven or eight very serviceable NHL defensemen, then they should be able to parlay one or even two of them into players that fill key roles elsewhere in the roster, or into draft picks.

I think u keep butler too, because he can be had for cheap and short term, and he can be a 7th defenseman if necessary.

Should a guy start skating every day and start taking contact at any level before we pencil him into the NHL lineup? Sieloff has a very long road back. Let's temper our expectations on this kid. I'm sure he's just happy to be off the meds and able to think about getting back to having a regular life again.

If he's as competitive as we've read, he'll definitely be thinking more than just happy to be ok. I bet he comes back more motivated than ever.

I don't know if you can move Wideman in any deal that makes your team better.
Keep Butler, Keep Wotherspoon up.
Injuries will happen, the cap floor is a reality and Wideman has an NMC and isn't a 5 million dollar defender.
Those variables point to him being a Calgary Flame next season.

I think Butler could be moved out for next year, Breen or Seiloff may be ready to make the jump next year and if they are Butler is expendable.

Breen has shown nothing to suggest he's an NHL'er.

I think trading Butler is stupid...he is finally playing good and seems to have it figured out.
Pretty much entering the age and experience wheelhouse of where you expect him to perform and keep improving a'la Giordano....why trade him now?
His only crime was being part of the Regehr trade....he is coming into his own IMO.

Tyler Wotherspoon Makes Me So Happy
Unless the Flames land some big fish via UFA or trade this summer we pretty much have to keep Wideman for cap reasons. And for another year or two, sure, keep Butler. Why not when there is so much cap space available and owners willing to spend? Like someone said above, having a surplus of serviceable d-men never hurt anyone, and sets us up nicely for the deadline should we want to move one.
Not unlike the Flames' surplus of goaltenders this season, really. We benefitted quite handsomely from that, I would say.

Yeah it annoys me. "Waterspoon" like wtf? Now Kerr's mispronounciation is rubbing off on other team's feeds, the Ducks announcers were pronoucing it Waterspoon too. Ugh.

Breen is nowhere near ready, as we saw in his call-up this year. Not sure he will ever be ready.

I would like to see Wideman and Butler moved out at the end of the year. Wideman at the draft and just let Butler walk. I think the Flames should go after a guy like Matt Niskanen in July to add to D. Breen isn't that good...Seiloff will need a year in Abbotsford.

It still blows my mind that people want to let go of the #2 shot blocker in the NHL.

That's a cool stat...how many giveaways and missed assignments does he have every night? Just because he can block shots we should keep him? Granted he has been better lately, but still -21.

Granted that we are a 26th place team, and didn't play as well at the beginning of the year. I hate it when people bring up a +/- stat, it means nothing.
That's like saying you want to give up Monahan because he is a -15.
