The Iginla trade: Players coming back in the deal comment on trade
Kenny Agostino on the trade...
Quote:
“It was looking like he was going to Boston and I thought, ‘That’s kind of cool,’ ” says Agostino, who had been in Grand Rapids, Mich., site of the regionals. “I woke up to go the bathroom around 6:30, 7 a.m., and I look at my phone. It’s been bombarded with 20 missed calls, 50 texts. I look at the first few texts and, all of a sudden, I put it together. I’m, like, ‘Oh my God.’ I woke my roommate up because I was frantic — ‘I just got traded for Jarome Iginla.’ ”
|
Ben Hanowski on the trade...
Quote:
He’d been in his apartment preparing for a busy stretch — morning practice, then a flight to Toledo, Ohio, for regionals.
“My phone was blowing up,” says Hanowski. “It took me a while to comprehend what was going on. I had to go on NHL.com to see that it was really happening. I thought my buddies were trying pull a prank on me. But it was for real. An interesting way to wake up.
“At the rink, we’re having our team meeting and our head coach (Bob Motzko) goes: ‘Anyone else get traded for a Hall of Famer last night?’ ”
“Such a big day, such a unique day,” says Hanowski, “that I forgot the actual date. A pretty weird feeling because you’re a college hockey player, more a fan of the game at that point. So to see you’re part of that trade? Almost seems like a fictional story.”
“Time’s really gone by pretty fast,” says Hanowski, who started this campaign with Abbotsford of the American Hockey League. “Seems like yesterday I was playing my first games up here. A fast year for me.”

Worse than 5 and 7 June, 2004? Worse than 24 May, 1986?
I think 5 June might be the worst for me.

Ugh... 7th of June, 2004 was bad for sure. February 28th, 1999 was pretty rough as I recall.

June 5th was the worst.
I knew then, just had to wait it out at that point.
Awful memory to dredge up so early in the morning.

Definitely June 5th, 2004. The Cup was in the building, and this city would have went bezerk.

Ya June 5, 2004 is definitely the worst. The biggest problem with March 27, 2013 was that it was 2 or 3 years too late.

Yup, exactly. 48 hours to wait (and dare to hope) knowing that it was going to end in disappointment. And knowing too, that - had they won - it would have been the greatest party ever. (and no cities would have been damaged or abused in the making of said party)

The Iginla trade didn't effect me as much as the Fleury trade.
Both sort of marked the end of an era for the Flames, but the Iginla trade felt more like turning over a new leaf than the end of something to me. It gave me more hope than anything.

I remember being in my car when I heard about the Fleury trade and I was so lost in thought that I ended up driving the wrong way on a one-way street downtown.
The Iginla trade wasn't overly sad for me. Sure, seeing Iggy go was weird, but I was actually kind of excited...it was the first step in moving out of the purgatory we had been stuck in the last few years.

I loved that: "Anyone else been traded for a hall of famer?"

Really great article for those snippets.
Can't imagine myself were I in university and read I've been traded for Jarome Iginla.
Incredible.

I totally agree that the game 6 loss was harder. That's when you knew, luckily I was totally bombed. My friend who I went to the games with was so hammered that in a small way I'm glad they didn't win that night so I didn't have to drag around a corpse all night. Or live with the fact that I left my friend to die in a random alley on 17th.

Oh no, I'm pretty sure Canucks fans would have trashed downtown Vancouver again.

I share the sentiment, but from a different angle. I really didn't like Fleury and had wanted to see him gone long before then, but that trade was the 'final' proof of what Calgary had become - A farm team for the elite teams in the NHL.
There was no longer any hope that the Flames would ever become a good team again. I felt that from now on, any players that the Flames drafted and developed would eventually just get picked off to the rich teams, and it felt like it would be only a matter of time before the team itself was picked off to a bigger city.
Dark days indeed.

It gave the team an opportunity to find a true leader in Gio who plays his heart out for 82 gm. a yr. when healthy, and doesn't float thru 20-25 gm. per yr. like Iginla the last 5 yrs. when you never knew he was on the ice. It also opened the door for the current group of young guys that are playing a lot more entertaining style of hockey, rather than lets all pass to Iggy every time we cross the blue line. Also, the current group seems to buy into the fact you have to play d in your own end, something Iginla never seem to accept.

Yea, Iginla never played in his own end in Calgary. You're right. And he definitely doesn't do it in Boston.

Iginla trade was probably the hardest day for me as a fan as well. Still hope that he wins his cup, and comes back to the Flames (but that is a huge pipe dream).
Was happy to see Fleury go, happy with what we got back.
Was sad to see the Flames lose in 2004, but the whole cup run was so unexpected, so magical, that it really didn't matter what the outcome was, the ride was wild. Honestly the number of people showing up at Olympic plaza for the 2nd place team was unbelievable.

June 5th by far the worst for me. My brother and I got a ride to the game with Jessie Conroy, we would have been partying with the Cup if they won. Would have been the greatest day of my life...
