having the World Cup here would be amazing. A logistical nightmare for FIFA so I don't see it happening. But it would be awesome.

Really, this is what passes for news in the Sun now?
This was already debunked yesterday in the new arena thread.
The renderings of the "NFL Stadium" in Toronto are from the new stadium they're building in Los Angeles (they didn't even remove the "Farmers' Field" name on the drawings).
The ones labelled as the Calgary stadium are 4 years-old from a proposed stadium for a "new professional sports team" that was supposed to break ground in 2010.

Isn't this the same thing that was posted in the "3 to 4 months" thread and refuted by Muta? He seems to be 'in the know' somehow with respect to this process.

It would be awesome to have some modern facilities. We could attract so much more o the city like concerts, shows that we currently cannot. Not to mention Free Agents!

I think the only thing that was debunked was the arena design. What is interesting is the Flames ownership ground maybe using this bid as a way to partial finance the new arena.
Bring on the World Cup!
Bring on the Winter Olympics!

World Cup in Canada is a big time pipe dream. Best case scenario I can see is a US hosting bid with a Canadian city involved. But Canada has exactly 1 outdoor grass stadium (which is effectively a pre-requisite to hosting a World Cup; field turf won't fly), and that will be nearly 50 years old in 2026. Hosting a World Cup will be a very expensive endeavour, and that's before you factor in the required FIFA bribe.

Gotta love the Sun. Those fake renderings show up on CP a couple days back and they magically end up in the Sun today? What a coincidence!

Wow - the Calgary Sun couldn't be bothered to do some research on these renderings, and the source? No wonder it's a rag.
The bid, though, is plausible.

Here's where that rendering came from: http://www.ceiarchitecture.com/proje...stadium-study/
Good lord, the Sun is terrible. Really, a random post on imgur is actually a good enough source to actually turn into a story?

It hasn't.
I can tell you, with absolute certainty, this specific concept isn't anything. Studies happen all the time, and this should be nothing more than a footnote. People need to understand that a study is far, far, far from anything that acutally gets built. If people knew how many things get 'studied' first and never built, you could make a library out of that material which would fill the Saddledome from top to bottom.

The Sun isn't reporting this as what is expected to happen. Some quotes from the article:
Quote:
But the Canadian Soccer Association has no idea where the renderings came from, with a spokesperson stating via e-mail that "they were not produced by Canada Soccer."
|
Quote:
Peter Hanlon, vice-president of communications for the Flames, said Tuesday evening they have never seen the renderings, either.
Stampeders president Gordon Norrie also wasn't shedding any light on the legitimacy of the graphics.
|
Quote:
"This was one of dozens of concepts that were brought forward to us, and it was interesting but nothing more than that," King told the Sun's Eric Francis.
"I can't tell you anything more for plans on a new facility other than we are planning one and we have been for years now," King added.

The article is more commenting on the rumors that are out there. It is just an attention grabber in hopes that some people just jump the gun and assume it is leaked info and they'll rush out and buy the paper or give the website some added traffic.

Having the world cup here would be unbelievable.
I already have a blast every few years cheering on other nations, usually England. Does that mean Canada would automatically qualify to play as well, being hosts? Probably still unlikely to happen, but with the money we would put into a new stadium, it would be some of the best facilities in the world to host such an event. Also, it gets the sport more attention in north america (don't think the nasl is quite doing the trick..) which has to be a plus to FIFA.

Just know that right now, nothing is finalized. This project is a long-term vision, and what Ken King has said in the media recently about this is exactly it is now - planning for a new arena. The magnitude of this project is large, so naturally, it needs time. There are many considerations during a project like this, and people need to be patient. Things just don't happen overnight. Edmonton's arena has been a LONG time in the making, most of which was the planning and preparing stage long before it really was cast into the public forefront.
