Man I hate it when parents get overly involved with their children's careers. I can understand her reasons for wanting him to go back for one more year but some of the stuff she said in the article hints of a little manipulation through guilt tactics.

Major manipulation and guilt trip, years of practice evident as well.

Well she is entitled to her opinion. If she thinks he will be better off in life to finish his degree before he tries to make the NHL that is fine. I would be willing to bet Johnny has asked her opinion about his path in life before, and I also bet he has asked a lot of other people close to him the same question. It's a big decision to make and it shouldn't be taken lightly.
In the end he has to be happy with his choice and not worry about the fans or his mother.

His surefire Hobey Baker win will suffice as a prom/grad replacement.
I'd rather graduate online, while making snow angels in thousands of dollars.

Al Morganti is right, the party for the Bean pot (and the national championship) would probably be a hell of a lot better then any prom or Grad party.
That interview is a must listen for those that think the sky is falling. There is also an additional bonus slam against the Oilers calling them soft like Swiss cheese.

Couldn't he be playing hockey with the Flames/Heat and finishing his degree? He can do spring and summer semesters. I'm not seeing the problem.

Yeah I heard the Morganti interview, it was definitely assuring from the Flames fan's point of view. I also really like how they said the Flames should take a small page out of the Oilers' book in that we should amp up the hype around Gaudreau, just because we can. Not everyday you get to bring in the top collegiate player in the US.
But Johnny and co. have my full blessing to take their season until April 12th and an NCAA championship if that means that he'll sign with us right after.

I completely understand her reasons but why come out and say that stuff to the media?

How many hobey winners have played the following year in the NCAA?

None, because it rarely ever goes to a junior year player.

Because they asked her?
She's just a Mom. She hasn't learned that when a reporter asks you a question its not the same as when the next door neighbor does it.

For sure he could, I just read your post as he signs and then stays at school for his senior year. Sorry for reading it wrong.

You pretty well spelled out why the Flames shouldn't amp up the hype. Hell with taking a page from the Oilers book I would burn it in a dumpster fire and do the exact opposite. Overhyping these kids is a recipe for disaster as it will be followed by unrealistic expectations. Look what happened to Sven already by being a little overhyped by fans and local media. He's almost looked at as a failure now despite taking the same course (being sent to the AHL for professional development) many young players have done to ensure a long NHL career.

I can't FRICKING wait until he signs because this constant whining, handwringing and self-loathing is so fricking annoying that it is actually worse than persistent trolls and 20-page arguments over semantics.
Get over it people - nothing to see here

That's a go-to move of parents who are losing their influence over their children. Especially moms, in my experience.

And you say one thing or another but leave the "taking jobs away from players with families" stuff for behind closed doors. I'm not going to get bent out of shape by what his mom said and my comment was more to parent over-involvement with kids as a lot of times being more of a negative than positive in professional sports.
