The thing that I have been trying to keep in mind amidst all of the frustration of this off-season has been that things really did go about as poorly as possible last season (well, REASONABLY possible). If the group of players just returns to form this season, that should mark significant improvement in itself. My expectations aren't even that huge: playoffs or no, I just want the team to be playing meaningful baseball in September.

Yep, I believe the team will be better this season..... Offense is okay, Defense should be better....
Main challenge is the Starting Pitching will not be on par with the other teams in the AL East.
I would guess, they will be slightly over .500 this year...
Jays made another round of cuts yesterday....
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...k_tor&c_id=tor
"The Blue Jays made another round of cuts on Monday morning by optioning outfielder Anthony Gose and re-assigning Mike Nickeas, Chris Getz and John Tolleson to Minor League camp.
Toronto now has 30 players remaining in camp:
three catchers,
eight infielders,
five outfielders
and 14 pitchers.
One catcher, two infielders and at least one pitcher likely will be sent down within the next couple of days"

Here's a decent article showing the battles at all positions and what options the Jays have heading into opening day.
Quote:
The Blue Jays have not yet announced who will fill two of their five rotation spots, their bench has yet to take shape and Jose Reyes’ hamstring soreness creates unwelcome uncertainty at shortstop. One way or another, Anthopoulos and Gibbons face a busy seven days.

Did Pittsburgh and Toronto get a Safety? That looks like a football score.

Looks like JA Happ & Rogers had a real tough day.....
I would think the Jays will either place Happ on the DL to start the season or Designate him for assignment

He still has options but I expect he would refuse assignment (I think that this scenario was mentioned earlier in the thread). His numbers for the spring (yeah, I know) are truly putrid. At this point the only viable options for the last spot in the rotation seem to be McGowan and Redmond. Am I missing anyone?
I'd like to see McGowan get the last spot and start off the season around 4-5 innings, with the Jays relying on long relief from their bullpen. Of course, I'd have liked to see them resolve their starting pitching issues in other ways, but that's past. I can actually see us breathing a sigh of relief at not signing Jiminez to the contract the Orioles did. Just frustrating right now!

Okay, that confirms the starters....
Dickey, Buehrle, Hutchison, McGowan and Morrow.
Curious on the status of JA Happ (Sent down to Buffalo (he must consent), DL or released).

I heard that Happ will start the season on the DL.

So will it be Sanchez that comes up after 4 games when McGowan blows out his arm or does Happ come off the DL?

Yes, Happ will start on the DL with tightness in his back. Rogers and Redmond will go to the bullpen.
Really happy for McGowan and hope he does well, but I'm not sure it's going to end well. Get the feeling the experiment will be short-lived and AA will be forced to make a move early in the season.

@gregorMLB
Tuiasosopo has been cut from the #BlueJays. Transaction to follow, he's out of options so that likely means he's going on waivers.

Good news all around:
Barry Davis @SNBarryDavis
According to AA Encarnacion is fine. Also says the hope is for Reyes to DH Friday in Mont. Says he will be ready for opening day. #BlueJays

Thank god. It would be nice "knock wood" to start a season fully healthy. No excuses

Looking forward to get the season going. The pitching is going to be an adventure this season, but I think the offence is going to be very strong and I am happy that the team is finally healthy (relative to the beginning of last season).

Here's a decent article
http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=447603
TSN asks the question.... many fans are thinking..
"QUESTION: Does Alex Anthopoulos take the blame if this season is a failure?
MacARTHUR: Yes, Anthopoulos will take some blame if this season is a failure, as he should. So should manager John Gibbons. So should the players. So should everybody in the organization."
"Typically, I don't like predicting because there are too many variables. I'll go so far as to say I think Rays starting pitching will catapult them to the American League East crown this year. The Red Sox will finish second in the division and win a wild card spot."
