Spitfires goalie walks out on team mid-game
http://www.tsn.ca/chl/story/?id=447380
Quote:
The Windsor Spitfires were left with just one goaltender Tuesday after having their starter walk out on them midway through Game 3 of their Ontario Hockey League playoff matchup with the London Knights.
Dalen Kuchmey pulled himself from Windsor's net, went to the dressing room, changed and drove away from the arena after giving up eight goals on 26 shots, leaving the Spitfires trailing 8-1 with 5:34 remaining in the second period.
London went on to win the game 10-2.
"You're going to have to ask him," Spitfires head coach Bob Boughner said when asked about Kuchmey's whereabouts during the third period. "He left the ice and the rink before the (second) period was over. He quit on our team and he quit on his teammates."

Sounds like maybe the kid was peod about being left in the game for too long. It's not the NHL and he's no Patrick Roy, so i'd guess he has some apologies to make before he allowed to play for the team again.

Boughner has a huge role to play here too. Left a young kid out to dry in a 8-1 beat down that was only half over.
Why put a young kid through that?

Why leave a kid in there for 8 goals? Sounds like you're trying to make him quit

Says that their backup was sick and would have preferred not to go in. Don't know if that justifies it?

It probably sucks to be left in in a situation like that more than I'll ever know, but that kid may have just killed any chance he had at a pro career. I'm not trying to be harsh and I certainly don't think that SHOULD be the case, but … hockey's a pretty tough "don't rock the boat" crowd in ways like this.

If indeed the backup was ill, it probably would have been a wise move for Boughner to call a time out after they started to get pummelled, talk to the kid and tell him "I'm not trying to embarrass you here, but I can't put the other guy in. I'm really sorry, but you'll have to take one for the team tonight", or something to that effect. Leaving him in there with no explanation at all probably wouldn't help matters. Both sides could have handled it better.

It looks like the guy who started the first two games was too sick to play, but was backing up. Boughner asked him if he could go in at some point, and the guy didn't sound too confident. If this Kuchmey guy was aware of that (and I'm not sure why he wouldn't be), I don't think there's really an excuse to act like a baby about it.

Surprised all the comments about Boughners role in this. Absolutely debatable whether he should have, but it's irrelevant. Kids reaction to a bad situation is unacceptable. Doesn't matter if it was appropriate to leave him or not, not how you handle a bad situation. Amazes me how many people think less than perfect environment excuses people from handling things like ####.

Brutal attitude however I hope someone grabbed the kid before leaving &/or they are in contact with him now.
After what happened a few weeks ago, the last thing you want is a kid extremely down on himself and then feeling scared to show face again!

If he was only starting because the starter was ill, he clearly knew the situation. This is a kid who quit on his team and there is no excuse for that. He just ended his career.

I feel bad for the kid. No idea what was said (etc..) but damn, seems he got overwhelmed and reacted to that. I know what that feels like. Hope everything works out.

Too funny. You have to wonder what that goalie was thinking. He must have known the situation and that he needed to play the entire game no matter what. Did he think the starting goalie was faking being sick?

He's a junior aged kid... they do stupid things sometimes.
The team has been crushed all three games in the series (6-1, 6-3, 10-3). He's getting shelled and feeling embarrassed. He probably regrets it now but in the heat of the moment stuff happens.

Brutal comments from a coach. Sounds like his teammates gave up on him first.
What the goalie did was dumb, but you don't make comments like this about a player.
