Agostino on the Flames roster (can't go to Abby) and there could potentially be the additions of Gaudreau and Arnold (if they sign ELCs for this season, as Agostino has). Forwards-wise I think we've got a full house. Obviously this could all change with some sudden injuries.
There's currently no 'hockey reason' to bring him back up. Promoting Sven would be for purely motivational reasons, and Burke doesn't strike me as that kind of GM. Emergency call-up not-withstanding, I don't see any reason why Baertschi shouldn't finish the year in the minors and hopefully go on a long playoff run.

When I saw him in Penticton he looked disinterested. IIRC others also commented on this at rookie camp. He got off to a bad start this season and it's progressed. When I saw him in Abbotsford he looked like the most skilled guy on the ice but he still had trouble staying on his feet and protecting the puck. He's a great talent, I hope he learns to transfer it to the NHL.

I thought he was fine until his first benching, then things really went off the tracks. I'll never understand that first benching. He was on a line with Hudler and Monahan and they were playing fine, were they expecting him all of a sudden be the offensive conscience on an offensive minded line?

I think they were just a total gong-show defensively. Hudler and Monahan clicked immediately. Sven would play the odd killer pass, but was too often the one responsible for giving the puck away. He was snake-bitten, gripping the stick too hard and spooning his offensive zone opportunities straight to the nearest D man. I think self-imposed and external pressures got to him & he hadn't learned the tools yet of how to deal with them.
This is why experience counts for everything.

I thought that when he was sent down to Abbythis would really light a fire under his butt and he'd shoot the lights out just to prove Burke and Co. were wrong.
But if IIRC it took quite a number of games for him to start scoring. What was the reason for this? I assumed it was because he was feeling sorry for himself and was just disinterested... but maybe I'm wrong.
Since I don't watch Abby games and certainly didn't see the games he played in December (he was sent down Dec 12, I believe) and January, can anybody enlighten me as to what the problem was?

Why would you assume that, what lead you to that conclusion?

Because there were rumors that he felt he didn't belong in Rookie/Prospects tourney in Penticton and his disinterested play reflected that. I assume he felt the same way when demoted to Abbotsford.
Why do you think he had such a terrible start in Abbotsford?

Probably the same reason things weren't working for him in the NHL. Maybe his rhythm was off. Maybe he was reading the plays wrong. Maybe he'd had so many bad bounces and bad luck he lost his confidence entirely. It could be any number of things, and probably a combination of several factors.
My take on it? I think Burke's arrival coincided with the coaching staff asking Baertschi to focus a lot more on the defensive side of the game (I think we can all agree this was probably the case). I think Sven was focussing on where the coaching staff wanted him to be, but this would have conflicted with his natural playing instincts, so he must have been way out of his comfort zone while he was trying to improve these other facets of his game. I think it's natural that he was probably over-thinking simple plays and taking too long to decide what to do. That's how I interpreted it when I saw him struggling with the Flames earlier this season, anyway.
These are all natural growing pains. The way I see it he's gone through his sophomore slump this season, even though he's still technically a rookie (who has played NHL games in 3 seasons). In a strange way he's ahead of the game.

Just to back my theory up, here's a Burke quote from a recent article you posted, Rerun:
Quote:
“I wouldn’t say he’s progressed or regressed,” said Burke, whose scathing assessment of the 21-year-old Swiss prospect last fall was followed by a December demotion to the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat hours after GM Jay Feaster was fired.
“His goal totals are disappointing for a player with his skill level, but he’s learning to do things that are vital if he wants to play here in terms of playing all three zones and for 60 minutes. He’s made dramatic improvement. His offensive production has not kept pace with what we had hoped for. But you might well see him.”
|
To paraphrase: "We asked a very skilled offensive talent to learn to play solidly in all 3 zones for the entire game (incredibly physically demanding to do that; takes awhile for a young, smallish body to develop that strength). He has improved dramatically in the way we have asked, however he has struggled to put up good offensive numbers while playing this new style of game"
He was asked to adapt. He's done it. Sound like a bad attitude? Hell no. He's just struggled to pot goals while he was learning to play this defensively responsible style of play.
Now that he's putting up some better numbers you have to think that if he can get it together he's going to be a much better player than before.

The entire management team - Feaster Weisbrod, Burke and Conroy - took turns saying how disappointed they were with Baertschi. It started in the development camp, where Baertschi was outperformed by a number of players. The feeling was he didn't think he needed to be there. This spilled over into the rookie camp, where, again, Baertschi was a step behind many players. Again, the comments were that Baertschi looked disinterested and it was mentioned he believed he thought he didn't need to be there because he wasn't a rookie. That is without mentioning the coaching staff and comments made about the 200 foot game. The comments are out there in the public record.
The problem with looking at prospects is getting sucked into where they were drafted, the points they put up, and a failure to look at them holistically, including behaviors away from the game. Baertschi is a really talented kid, but he has challenges with his game that make him an easy target for hockey people that expect a complete player. He gets people all excited about his offensive potential, but his lack of 200 foot game and commitment to finding balance in his game have him struggling to find a home in the NHL. Baertschi has quickly become the Calgary version of one of the Oilers Fab Five, where certain fans are so in love with his offensive potential they are incapable of seeing the writing on wall or the challenges he is failing to face. Even when the team goes to extremes of mentioning publicly their displeasure with his erformance or attitude - showing up to two different camps with belief you don't need to be there is an attitude issue - or benching the player or even dispatching the player to the minors. The team is still not happy with his performance in the minors, or growth as a player, as recently mentioned by the team president. I'm not certain how this is even up for debate. I guess the only ones who see the obvious problems with the player are just a bunch of sheep.

Ok, since they all took turns, it should be easy to find some quotes.

You're the one making the claims without any proof, don't expect me to do your research for you. I'm not interested in starting a search I know is fruitless.
