Why are we already writing off our captain? Seriously, he is the last guy I want to trade on this team.
Sounds like another captain we had recently. Fact is this is a bottom 5 team and even though I love gio as much as the next guy we need to maximize our assets. Hes had an amazing year so far and a cap friendly contract. You have to give to get and I think we should do it.

No.
I don't care if Gio's value is high, you're already writing him off when he hasn't even finished his first year of being captain. Look at how positive this rebuild has been with him leading way. Look at how bad we played when he was injured. He makes a difference in that locker room, he makes this team better.

No to what? Were not a bottom 5 team? Just saying you can't love everyone on the team when we're a lottery a team. He's probably going to be over the hill when we're ready to contend. Just my opinion and this year has been quite the anomaly over his career.
Yeah, but you need veteran leadership to help streamline the rebuild process. That veteran presence is invaluable to green rookies. If you don't have that, you just become the Edmonton Oilers - self-entitled kids with a comfortable attitude for losing.
Giordano is literally leading the charge for this team by playing balls-to-the-wall night in and night out. He's our captain, leading by example, and is a huge reason why we're seeing success now even with the kids in the lineup.
Sometimes, you hold on to your veterans. This is one of those cases.

There comes a point where you become a bottom feeder, developing players for other teams to use to stay at the top. In essence we become a farm team to the elite. What happens when the futures we acquire become stars, do we trade them as well for more futures?

As Burke has said the two players closest to untouchable on this team are Monahan and Giordano. Giordano is looking like a fantastic captain and has turned himself into a legit top pairing defenseman. Why would we deal that player when he's in his prime, likes it here and is on a reasonable contract? He can be a leader and example for the kids in our rebuild.
Sure we can trade anybody. But it would take a crazy overpayment for us to move Gio IMO. I'm surprised any true Flames fan is suggesting this. You don't trade players just because they have good value unless they are on expiring contracts.

Nikolaj Ehlers seems to be getting more and more impressive; that other board is now raving about him. One guy even compared him to MacKinnon. Some of the highlights for his offensive skill... wow.

Whoever compared him to MacKinnon is on drugs. From everything I've seen from Ehlers, he doesn't have the power in his game that MacKinnon has and he's smaller. He also doesn't have the same wheels, but he's still quick. He is really skilled though, and if we didn't have a size problem, I could see us taking him.

Id love to see Ehlers play a long stretch without Drouin on his line. That would go a long way in showing what he really is. Right now it buyers beware.

This is Ehlers. From watching this, he is quickly looking more like a top 3 pick now instead of a mid rounder. If he keeps it up, he might be a riser like Drouin was last year.
If we are picking 5th and he's on the board, I would take him even though he's a bit short.
He's got great speed, passing ability, shot, and is very good offensively.

We already have too many short players/prospects. Pass
We lack skill though. It's also not like he's a midget, he's 5-11 which was as tall as Langkow, or taller than Cammalleri, Hudler, Gaudreau and Baertschi.
Ideally we'd find someone that has both high end skill and is 6-3, but unfortunately that guy doesn't exist this year. You're either getting someone that's mediocre and big or moderately sized and skilled.

He's not writing him off he is trading him for two potential top 5 picks. That would be a crazy deal for Calgary and Florida likely says no thanks.
Just because he is talking about trading him doesn't mean he is writing him off.

Hopefully someone below us (Florida, Islanders) really like Ehlers and take him before we pick. This would allow one of the big 4 to slide to us at #5.

I think some people seem to think teams only trade players when they don't like, need or want them anymore. In a rebuild like this you should be open to trading any players when their value will fetch you longterm franchise cornerstones.
I love Giordano, but if someone comes calling desperate for his services, Burke is actually in a position where he can demand whatever he freakin' wants from them. A team captain, under contract, who was in the discussion for TC (supposedly) and in the discussion for the Norris (supposedly) should fetch a monster package. If not, end of discussion – no trade.

Don't trade players unless they have expiring contracts? When did that become a rule of thumb? I'm just saying look what happened with holding onto Iginla for too long and again its just my opinion. No reason to bring my "fandom" into it.
