Giordano's contract has a $4.02M AAV over 5 years to put this into perspective.

Yes I think $5.5 and $6 for Faulk's last two seasons are on the high side. As a comparison, Giordano's last 3 seasons will come at a price of $4M per season.

If Giordano's contract was up and we re-signed him today he'd be getting $6.5-7.5 million.

Giordano has the best non entry level contract for a defenseman in the league. Much like Glencross's contract.

Any time I've watched Faulk play he's been one of the best guys on the ice. Even watching him at the dome you could tell he was a special player.

We should express each deal as a percentage of the cap. He is 7% of the cap in a 70 million dollar cap world. The average Salary is over 3 million on a 23 man roster. If you assume the 4th line and 2 extras will average 700k then you have 3.8 million per player to spend.

So if he is a 3/4 defensemen on a contending team then this is a good deal and inline where the market would be. I haven't seen him play so I can't comment on ability. But the dollars are inline with a 3/4 defensemen.

I don't understand the fascination that some people have with the actual money during certain years of the contract. As a fan, all I care about is the cap hit.

Well if the cap does continue to trend up at a rate of 4% a year and the upper limit is set to 68.5 million next year, the cap is theoretically at 87 million 6 years from now.

Teams easily have room to pay starting goaltenders, top 7 forwards or top 4 defenseman 5 million each per season for those not on entry level deals. I think Faulk at worse would be a #4 at the end of that, and at his age, I think that's a number any team can handle.

I do wonder what Giordano would command on an extension the way he has played this year. He has one more year which means he'd be 32 when he starts his next contract. How much money and how much term does a team want to give to a defenseman that age?

I didn't say they can't improve but some players hit their peak earlier than others. I see Brodie as a good 3-4 guy capable of 35 points off the blueline. I also look at his game and I see a lot of Ian White there. Sorry I am not as high on Brodie as some others but I see a good puck movin D man with a good shot who is average defensively and is prone to bad pinches that turn the puck over. I just don't see in todays cap a $5M per year player there.

35 points would be in the top 30 in the league...petty good numbers if he hits those and certainly worth 5 million per in this new upper cap world.

We should start a thread on how to allocate a 70 Million dollar cap if we were building a team. I think it would clarify a lot of these discussions. Because there is two discussions going on here. How much is a 3/4 defensemen worth and is Faulk at least a 3/4 defensemen.

I think the reality is many people view these contracts in a 50 million dollar cap world and not a 70 million dollar cap world. That means what was a 3.5 mil contract 4 years ago is a 5 mil contract today.

Almost fell out of my chair reading this.

I just don't get the lack of respect for Brodie... he is already - at 23 - a top pairing defenseman.
He skates better than 95% of the d-men in the league (if not more)
When it comes to carrying the puck out of our zone and starting rushes, I would think he is top 20 or 30 in the league.
His offense, especially his shot, isn't where it needs to be yet, but again - he's 23. It'll come.
I think the DKeith comparisons are justified - his projection and ceiling are potentially that.
He is an absolute gem and if the Flames gave him this contract, I would consider it a bargain.

By the way: if Gio were up for an extension today, I think we'd be looking at $6.5 - $7m per, as Tinordi said earlier.

The Flames are getting a huge boost to their rebuild in that Giordano is quite literally turning into a No. 1 defenseman and that Brodie is already a top-four guy and headed towards top-two status.

Giordano's always been a solid guy and at his age you'd have to figure he'd hit his ceiling but he's come into his own. He's already a top-pairing guy and could be turning into a No. 1 - his stats this year are absolutely unreal given his situation and circumstances. His next contract will be huge.

Brodie - same story. For a mid-round pick to become a NHLer is great. The fact that he's a top-four guy is even better but honestly he looks like he could become a top pairing guy. That would be a huge coup for a 4th rounder and one less important piece for the Flames to have to acquire down the road. Not sure he'll ever be a 55-point guy but as a two-way d-man he's coming into his own.

When you do a rebuild you'll get a couple or three top-5 picks but that's not enough to get every major piece you need to be a contender down the road (like top pairing defensemen). You NEED to hit a home run or two later in drafts and Brodie is turning into one.

This may be one of Rutherfords last acts as GM....sounds like he is retiring at seasons end.

Name me a team in the NHL besides us and Edmonton where he is a top pairing D man? Saying his ceiling is Duncan Keith can just as easily be said it is Ian White. Top 20 or 30 in the league in moving the puck up the ice? He is not even top two on the Flames, both Gio and Russell are better puck movers and definitely turn the puck over less. Again, I see Ian White much more than Duncan Keith but we shall see. I hope you are right.

If Brodie keeps up their play, 5 mill will be a bargain in coming years.

I've been looking through a lot of the other teams, and I have an honest question because I'm interested in your opinion. Which 2 (or more, I suppose) defenseman on the following teams would you have ahead of TJ Brodie?

Dallas
New York Islanders
Tampa Bay Lightning
Detroit Red Wings
Buffalo Sabres
Toronto Maples Leafs
Florida Panthers
Ottawa Senators
Colorado Avalanche
