When I was a kid, I used to smash nickels down to the diameter of quarters, and then go to the arcade.
Despite its illegality, I quintupled my investments and considered myself quite the shrewd entrepreneur. One day my kids will ask how to make the most of their money and I will suggest to them that physical deformation is your quickest route to success.

I wonder why it's illegal for coins and not bills? Anyone know why? Is it because of the reason you stated Muta?
Yeah, the outrage is pretty funny. Like I said, I find it distasteful, and it does nothing for me, but we're not talking about puppy kicking here.
What's with all the threads lately being started about 'OMG can you believe who's bringing down the fabric of society now?!' I know it's a common thing on the internet, but CP generally hasn't been this bad.

probably something to do with the fact that at certain points in history the metal used to make the coins was worth more then the face value of the coins so it was more profitable to melt them down.
Doubt that has ever been true about the bills

I used to go down to the train tracks and turn my hard earned allowance into little sharp discs of metal.
Those were the days.

I'm surprised that worked. I wish I knew that when I was a kid.

Can still find these all over the US too. Not so much in Canada anymore - but because of that law, they had to use blank copper discs instead of pennies:

I promised myself not to listen to AMP Radio after the Remembrance Day ad in 2011. This only further cements my personal belief to avoid the station.
http://www.calgarysun.com/2011/11/01...nkles-veterans
The problem for me with this controversy is the way Amp Radio is personally attacking people who take issue with this. "It's not our fault"... No? Then who decided to do this in the first place. I'd have less of a problem with this if they actually owned it.

Burning money does none of these things. Also, it won't cause people to listen to that station. While the idea that any publicity is good publicity may be generally valid, this is still a crappy radio station that is redundant within the market. Offending people likely won't lead to new listeners any more than the last idiotic stunt they pulled did.

Umm, no.

Assuming that the burned money is paper money with negligible intrinsic value, no real goods are destroyed, so the overall wealth of the world is unaffected. Instead, all surviving money slightly increases in value; everyone gains wealth in proportion to the amount of money they already hold.[2] Economist Steven Landsburg proposes in The Armchair Economist that burning one's fortune (in paper money) is a form of philanthropy more egalitarian than deeding it to the United States Treasury.[2] In 1920, Thomas Nixon Carver wrote that dumping money into the sea is better for society than spending it wastefully, as the latter wastes the labor that it hires.[3]

However, considering the negligible increase in wealth distribution burning $5,000 would have, it still seems rather wasteful.

Almost as good as poking a hole in a quarter and then dangling it up and down to trip the credits lever.
Worked on older games, then 'stop valve' technology kicked in, only allowing coins to move one way.

Good grief.

From what I understand, this way of tracking hasn't been used in Calgary for years.
[In radio, BBM is the main provider of ratings services. The company has traditionally used a diary-based system for tracking radio audience habits and this system is still used in most markets. In Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary ratings are now measured using the Portable People Meter (PPM) technology.<ref>[2][dead link]</ref>
Maybe bobblhead doesn't live in Calgary.....

Someone started a "Indiegogo" campaign as a sort of "protest" (I guess) against this crappy radio station and their idiotic stunt.
http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/th...ial-experiment
Looking to raise 5 grand for "Inn From The Cold". They are over 10% there on the first day.

Are these clowns also either putting their stupid name in various grass spots in Calgary, or getting listeners to?
Right at Anderson and McLeod there was a huge "Amp Radio 90.3" made into the grass on the side of the overpass.

So they gave away $10,000 to a lucky listener but the damage has already been done.
Ford Canada has pulled its ads from the station.

In all fairness, they also are going to donate an additional $10k to a charity of the winners choice, so if there is any silver lining, that is it.
That still doesn't take away the fact the original 5k was a doosh move.

So burning $5k cost them a major advertiser and they had to spend another $10k to try and repair their reputation. And the odds remain very high that they won't see any noticeable increase in listeners. So much for "any publicity is good publicity".
