You questioned why anyone would listen to AM or FM radio, and the answer was blatantly obvious. Not everyone wants to spend a monthly fee to listen to the same crap with fewer commercials.

Fewer commercials would suggest there are commercials on sat music stations. There are not. NONE. That is why I pay for it. And no 30% fricken Nickelback, Kim Mitchell and all that other useless music I don't want to hear.
Anyway...back to gear grinding.

There absolutely are, it's always just commercials for other satellite radio stuff.
A few of the comedy ones even have actual commercials, you know, for products.
As I said, let's go round and round all day if you want, but it's all the same junk, just different piles.

FM radio also has significantly better sound quality over satellite radio. I have XM but only listen to XM music on road trips; as the sound quality is that much worse. It is especially noticeable if you have a good stereo in your car.

FM or Satellite?
Will anyone else admit they listen to 660 News way more often than they should be?

Today, today grinds my gears.
Cut my thumb open while making breakfast and had to go to the hospital for painful as hell stitches. On the way out of the hospital a guy in the parking lot flags us down because the skid plate on our car has ripped in half and is now dragging along the road.

Literally haven't willingly listened to non-talk radio since I got my first ipod in... 2003 I think (cool dude alert). Hate to be that guy, but I'm kinda amazed people still listen to the radio.
Happened to hear ~45 mins of cjay last time I was in Calgary, and they played pretty much the exact same playlist as 10+ years ago with maybe one new song. Since it was 45 mins, that probably only means there were four songs played... so one new and three old, but still.

"Weather and Traffic on the 1's" has saved me a crapload of time, I wager. I not only listen to that, I tell other folks about it.

Maybe I'm getting out of touch as I get older, but imo if you're going to be a rock alternative station, you shouldn't be playing that many songs in a day that overlap with two top 40 pop stations.
Lorde - Royals
Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks
Imagine Dragons - Radioactive X2
Lorde - Team X2
Foster The People - Coming Of Age X2
Passion Pit - Take A Walk
Capital Cities - Safe And Sound
Imagine Dragons - Demons
fun. Feat. Janelle Monae - We Are Young

Wow, I remember back when alternative was good.
I listen to the Native station, except on weekends. No commercials, no talking.

Yeah, 5 second blips about the other channels. That's the same as 4 or 5 minutes blocks of commercials. And I said the "music" channels. I know the comedy channels have commercials.
It's not the same junk. Sorry, completely disagree and will continue to pay for the WIDE selection of music without constant talking and commercials and mandated cancon. Sattelite is simply way better than regular radio and it's not even close. While I'll agree with Ken that it's not perfect sound quality, I find it is fine with the built-in systems and not add ons within vehicles.

660 News could be a separate gear grinder for me. The other day I saw some police tape, Global News guy setting up, etc. and I was curious what had happened. Temporarily switch from (insert web radio, podcast, Songza, etc.) and turn on 660 News to get a little... news... I felt like I had come down with ADHD for the 10 minutes that I listened to it.
660 News time: 4:41. And canned piece of entertainment news. 660 News Time: 4:43. Vague and unhelpful traffic information. 660 News Time: 4:45. A brief stock market report. Ads. Ads. Ads. 660 News Time: 4:49. About 15 seconds of local news.
I know that they have that format for a reason, but holy smokes, I just couldn't handle it.

You must really love satellite...
Seems to me like you really need to justify all that money you spend in order not to listen to commercials. That's fine.

I do love it. It is a great service that kicks regular radio ass.
And I'm not justifying anything. I am paying for a service that is worth it and maybe even worth more. Both my wife and I have it in our vehicles and wouldn't live without it.

My stupid, stupid car grinds my gears.
Yes it's 14 years old, and yes I was dumb for buying a 12 year old car and expecting it to last more than two years, but dammit, it still grinds my gears.

Why be a radio snob about it though?
It's like the beer snobs - you like craft beer that's great. Enjoy it. But why constantly try and tell everyone else how much better it is than the mass produced stuff?
Personally, had XM in my car for a year after buying it and don't have it anymore. It was alright. There are LESS commercials but they still do exist. Would rather listen to my own CDs or playlist though or just shut it off and listen to the sound of my engine and enjoy the driving experience. Not worth it for $22/month.
Too funny when people can't just enjoy stuff without trying to convince everyone else how much better it is.

The amount of Taxi drivers that are allergic to using their signal lights.
When it's your job to drive people to their destination, you should be held to a higher standard and follow the simple rules of the road.
