Usually it's a poor hockey sense that keeps man-boys from making the jump to the NHL. Ekblad apparently has lots of hockey smarts.

While not saying that they're the same kind of player, Erik Johnson also was touted with a lot of hockey smarts but still floundered early on with a number of reasons.

FWIW Brad Curle (PbP guy for the Hitmen) on the Fan 960 said the Flames are heavily scouting Sam Reinhart and have been following Reinhart around all season.

Scouting Ekblad and Reinhart ... how tragic for us

Not that surprising, the Flames knew they'd be likely to pick top 5 all year long and have probably been heavily scouting all the top prospects moreso than normal.
Plus Burke tried very hard to draft Brayden Schenn to unite him with brother Luke in Toronto. Plus the Sedin thing. It isn't inconceivable with Max Reinhart already in the fold that Burke would love to get Sam.

I've decided not to care about finishing 4th-6th. I'm confident that if Ekblad/Reinhart/Bennett are worth it, Burke will package our pick with 1 or both of our 2nd rounders to move up... And I'd be fine with that.

Really? i always thought Ej was touted as a physical specimen, could skate, hit, and shoot but ended up not having that great of IQ. EJ also tore his acl or something in his leg so that hurts development

No way the Flames are moving up unless Gaudreau or Baertschi is including with our first round pick.

If past trades to move up are anything to go by I don't think it would cost too much to move up. It is not like there is a generational talent going this year. Next year maybe quite a bit more but this is not the year to be able to demand high payment.

We've been heavily scouting Reinhart. We've been heavily scouting Ekblad.
Someone upstairs must think it's within the realms of possibility to be in a position to snag one of them.
Maybe Burke is feeling lucky...

Anyone have any content to link to re: a source for Katz making the oilers pick Yak? Have heard that rumour on here a few times but have never seen anything else...?

Physical specimen definitely, but not like people were calling him the 'tools with the toolbox' like they were when he was in the league.
Blue Jackets' report from Central Scouting
As for the heavy scouting of Ekblad and Reinhart, I don't think it indicates anything special. It wouldn't be out of the normal for us to make sure we're doing our homework, given that we could have the opportunity to draft either guy. That being said, I hope we do.

Yeah, I don't see how that means it was Katz.
There are enough people higher than scouts and lower than Katz that it could have been anyone.

Duhatschek speculated it might have been Tambelini:

You wonder. Lots of people in Edmonton believe that owner Darryl Katz had some significant input into the decision to draft Nail Yakupov first overall in 2012 rather than opt for the safer choice, defenceman Ryan Murray, who would have filled a greater organizational need. With every passing day, that decision looks more and more suspect. Murray was limited to 23 games with the Everett Silvertips last year because of major knee surgery, but even as an NHL rookie, has looked good on the Columbus defence, playing a lot with James Wisniewski and providing the defensive presence on that pair. What if Murray turns out to be Alex Pietrangelo good – and they left him on the table to draft another offensive player, of which they had plenty already? How do you assess blame there? Or maybe they already have, since the GM that called Yakupov’s name, Steve Tambellini, is no longer running the show.
