Sven + pick #5 is gross overpayment for pick #2 or #3.

Do you think our 2nd + pick #5 would do it?

Would you guys consider trading next year's first to Buffalo for 1st overall to take Ekblad?
Then the Flames would draft Ekblad and whoever is at 4th or 5th (Draisaitl / Dal Colle).

No. The players at the top of this draft are for the most part not considered NHL ready from what I have read. Next year there are 2-3 prospects that have "franchise" potential. While the Flames season has been enjoyable I would not be surprised if next year they take a step back. Too risky with McDavid, or Eichel as possible picks

No, I think that would be foolish.
I believe MacDavid, Eichel, Hanafin, Barzal will all be better players than Ekblad... Despite how hard we play and our refusal to tank, I don't know if making that risk is the right thing to do? (Buffalo would also want more as there is no garantee we would finish bottom 5)
If it did happen, I would want Burke to work his magic with Florida and trade #5 for #3... Getting both Ekblad and Bennett would fill our two biggest holes in the rebuild and we could focus on trading for a legit RW.

I would. But only if it is top 5 protected. But then Buffalo wouldn't do that.

I think we're ok with Carolina because they've levelled off the last little bit ... but Nashville and Ottawa are coming on strong.

The further Ottawa drops the better the pick for Anaheim. The rich will get richer. Dammit! Stupid Sens atleast try not to be bottom 10 with the talent you have.

Good trade for the Ducks. Took some heat for saying the Senators could potentially be a lottery team last summer. Yet, here we are.

I had them barely making the playoffs but I didn't think they would be this bad with Spezza, Karlsson, Ryan and Anderson. But yes great trade for the Ducks and they could potentially replace Ryan with Virtanen in the draft.

am curious, if we did get the #1 pick in the draft, would anyone still consider drafting a dman at #1? has ekblad provided any reason to believe that he has what it takes to be a top pairing dman?
there's just so many dmen drafted in the top 5 that never amount to the hype, so am curious on CPs thoughts this year with ekblad.

I think we do because I think Ekblad is Burke's guy, but I'd prefer to take Reinhart.

If the Flames get the first pick. I pray to the Nordic gods they take Ekblad. I feel they can skip a center in this draft if they had a choice. With Backs Monahan and Stajan guaranteed three center spots and Knight, Granlund and others chomping at the bit for the fourth spot.
And then there's Arnold and Jankowski Developing possibly in time for the 15/16 season. There is a nice development trajectory happening in the organization when it comes to centers.

I'm 50-50 between Ekblad and Reinhart... If we did get #1 and wanted a dman I might be inclined to try and trade it to the Sabres for #2 plus extra's since I think they ought to be partial to a forward and I would probably get what I want anyways.

I like Reinhart #1, if it was up to me. I think Burke would pick Ekblad though.

Its funny to compare the tone here this year vs last year (McKinnon vs Seth Jones) where there were posts about how No 1 C is so much higher success than No 1 D, and the lists of success for both position.
Personally I would be very very happy to get a top 3 pick.... Ekblad sounds like a need for sure, but Sam Bennett and Reinhart could probably become the best player in the draft. Can't go wrong there.....

None of Reinhart, Bennett or Draisaitl appear to be the same level of player as MacKinnon/Barkov to me. They are looking closer to the Monahan level. Ekblad meanwhile appears closer to Jones than the forwards are to the forwards last year. That is why the discussion is a lot different this year. Add to that we're actually looking pretty good at centre with Backlund having developed into a #2, Monahan now in the fold, Stajan locked up and Jankowski, Knight, Arnold, etc still in the system. We could be just fine as is as long as Monahan turns into a #1 which seems likely. On the other hand we have no top 3 defense prospects. We don't have much in terms of size on defense. We are lacking right shooters on defense. Ekblad fills that.
But you are right, we can't go wrong if we had a top 3 pick. Doesn't look like we will though.
