To be fair, I think he actually is wondering what's wrong with a predominantly Russian population joining back up with Russia. Russia wants them, they want Russia to want them... I see where he's coming from with his question.
I think he isn't understanding the implication of illegal annexation, however; not a problem, not everyone knows about this stuff as much as others.
Ignoring that geographically half of Crimea has a 30-40% Ukrainian minority and not ethnic Russian population, only the areas around Sevastopol, Simferopol, Feodosiya and Kerch are 90% Russian. Given a lot of Ukrainians Crimeans seem to have stayed away from the referendum (either from intimidation or because of ballot choices) you can't just annex a whole region based on what amounts to a biased non-internationally monitored vote brought upon by armed intervention.
In a move no one didn't see coming, Russia declares it will annex Crimea into the Russian Federation based on the "more than convincing" vote after it's brazen military invasion earlier last month. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26630062
What kind of Ukrainian assets are in Crimea and can they afford to sacrifice them to get the military personnel out?
The Ukrainian forces should not engage Russian soldiers in Crimea. They need to withdraw and defend mainland Ukraine from invasion. If a shooting war starts in Crimea, Russia will have justification to invade the mainland.
I guess it would be nearly impossible to get these guys out anyway. Russia controls the land and sea ports, so no ships or aircraft out. Driving out is probably not going to work either, so I guess they are hooped.
Well the soviets invaded without badges on their uniforms. It wouldn't surprise me if the soviets dressed up in Ukrainian garb and made a big mess.

Sure. Why would I want my country to get hit by any real sanctions. It would hurt our stock market, our currency, and I work in banking industry. It may steam inflation, job cuts, money fleeing Russia and so on.
Pointman -
I am 100% against what your government is doing right now, however, that isn't why I am posting.
You have given a very unique perspective to this forum, one we are lucky to have - a perspective from someone within Russia itself. As you and others on here discuss issues which naturally get people's blood boiling, you keep answering questions with what appears to be a calm and more importantly honest reply. You seem to always have rational responses i.e. the one I quoted - why would I want my own income to suffer despite what my government is doing. This is sort of common sense, but easier to see when someone lays it out.
Your unfiltered perspective is something which we wouldn't of had 20 years ago in an event such as this.
Thank you for this.

I suspect this just Russia's first step. I doubt it will be too much longer before we see the Southern and Eastern part of Ukraine under Russian Control.
A guy I used to work with who is Ukrainian likened this to BC voting to join the USA because they feel more American than Canadian, not sure I agree with him but it's still brutal for that country to be split up like that.

P.S I told him they can have Quebec
I know you probably weren't serious and that a lot of people in Alberta say this... but I really really don't want Quebec to separate. It would be a disaster, honestly.

Haha! Detroit is practically already part of Southern Ontario. At this point I think most Americans would be looking the other way and just hoping we keep it....
Canada would finally have a Stanley Cup winner in the 21st Century.

I don't see it happening. Estonia is part of NATO. If Russia sets one boot in Estonia, Article 5 will be invoked and Russia will be at War with all NATO countries. Article 5 states that an attack on one NATO country is an attack on all NATO countries. This was invoked after September 11, 2001.
I'm sure the Russians are poking to see if NATO has any balls anymore. Buildup troops and see what they do. But I don't don't see Russia entering Estonia.
If they do, either we're on for another European war, or NATO is dissolved because it is useless.
