We'll isn't this interesting, Now that Russia has basically absorbed Crimea, this is no longer about protecting the Ukraine, its about getting assurances that Putin won't go any further (and deciding if he's believable), and moving on to the next news item for the current Western Governments.

Now that Russia has declared Crimea as a part of Russia, any kind of attack by the West to "Liberate it" would now be considered at a different level in terms of acts of war and Russia's response would be entirely different.

You know, I have to give the devil his due, while the West was talking sanctions and fumbling around, Putin acted extremely decisively, invaded a neighbor with next to no shots fired, and rammed through a vote that gave him legitimacy there.

Who ever planned this out did one hell of a bang up job.

Basically its over, Putin will leverage his energy exports to keep the West in Line.

If I recall, don't a large number of Russia's pipeline run through Ukraine.

I know Ukraine depends on Russia for much of it's energy, but wouldn't it be nice if they found an alternative supply, and blew those pipelines up. I guess then Russia would just roll across the rest of the steppe.

I still believe they are going to invade parts of eastern Ukraine.

I think Ukraine is dependent on Russia for a lot more than just energy.

BBC article got it right if you read the actual article. Options were to join Russia or to get a greater autonomy WITHIN Ukraine.

Sure. Why would I want my country to get hit by any real sanctions. It would hurt our stock market, our currency, and I work in banking industry. It may steam inflation, job cuts, money fleeing Russia and so on.

The people with the power, guns, and money don't give a #### about what twitter thinks of them. Look at what the end result was in Iran, Syria, and Egypt, and to bring this back to the main topic, Ukraine. In the end, the jerks with the guns won.

You're missing the point. Social media has been active in organizing revolutions. It's a cheap, efficient way to spread messages - and it WILL be accessed, despite government limitations.

Ground forces moving in are impactful, I understand that, but that doesn't stop the exchange of information from those that demand change. It never will. Communication is a powerful thing.

As a side note, did you know the Mumbai attacks were coordinated using social media? Never would have happened without it. There's an example of power and guns directly influenced by technology - no matter how evil and unwanted that specific incident was.

Pulling or not pulling it again will have no impact on average Russian's life (aside from possible impactful sanctions of course).

Uhh... have you seen the news recently? Russia has already faced penalties for this, and their economy has already contracted dramatically.

Long term this instability will finally force Europe to look elsewhere for more reliable energy. This will be a huge loss for the Russian people.

There was a huge fall about 13% on the stock markets few days ago when the tensions were at the peak. After the vote we had 5% rise though. I haven't heard of any real sanctions except for something against 20 or so officials.

Russia is stable source of energy. It never stop delivering through all this drama.
