Actual spread, who really knows. Perception plays a big role on these rankings in my opinion. First, we passed on TT and then we passed on Maata to take such an off the wall pick...
If these rankings are based on how other scouts think we did, I am not all that surprised we are ranked so low.

Now, to be fair, the Flames passed on Tervainen to pick Jankowski AND a kid with an NHLE of 1. Now, I don't know of a single NHLer who's ever made the show full-time with a draft-year NHLE that bad, but its worth pointing out that the Flames passed on Tervainen to pick TWO long-shot players.

Was Patrick Sieloff also an off the board pick?

Curiously enough, not really.
A lot of people (including me) will tell you that any player getting out-produced by his goalies in junior has basically zero chance of being a career NHLer. As in I don't think it's ever been done. Players with the hockey sense to be full-time NHLers have the hockey sense to put up more than 2 points in juniors as an 18 year old, even just through sound positioning and safe passes.
But for some reason he was on the radar of enough scouts that guys like McKenzie and Pronman were expected him to go in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Hmmm, I didn't realize Sieloff's stats were so low. Sure, you aren't talking about Kanzig

He was also was the favorite to be the Captain for team USA at the WJ's and likely would have if it wasn't for his injury.

Kanzig's draft-year production was a bit better than Seiloff, but here's where I make myself a hypocrite; I actually think Kanzig was a good pick.
If I *had* to lay money, I'd put down about 10:1 odds against him ever becoming a full-time NHLer (except maybe as a goon). But man, he absolutely knocked my socks off at the prospect tournament. In that less-than-10%-chance that he makes a career of it in the big show, I think Kanzig could really be something.
Although unlikely, I think Kanzig's ceiling could be as high as someone like Hal Gill.
I think Seiloff's ceiling is probably closer to a Mark Fistric-type player.
They both probably end up as Chris Breen or Matt Pelech types, but I think there's a huge difference in ceiling between the two.

For sure.
But take a look at how many captains of the American WJC team actually become career NHLers. I did once, and went back about 15 years, and I think I found something like 3 guys who ever become NHL players of any note.
Edited: Team USA Captains since 2002:
Riley Barber
Jake McCabe
Jason Zucker
John Ramage
Derek Stepan
johnathan Blum
Brian Strait
Kyle Lawson
Nathan Davis
Mark Matiera
Mark Stuart
Just putting that out there.

Teuvo was also more of a long-shot than most of the others available to the Flames at the 2012 draft. Girgensons, Ceci, Wilson, Hertl, Määttä are already in the NHL.
Quenneville et al seem to be desperate for a second line center and it appears that they're going to try Teräväinen now that his season with Jokerit has ended. No harm in that but Teuvo has been slow to mature physically, so I don't think anyone can say if he can make a positive impact this season. Typically the NHL is too much of a shock especially to a smaller player, and this isn't preseason, this is a time when teams are at their best.
Can't deny that he dominated his age group and he was the best forward on Jokerit as far as I understand. Beyond that, who knows. Better skater than Mikael Granlund was, tiny bit taller, similar level of offensive talent. Probably a nice player in a couple of years.
EDIT: reading hfboards, it appears the Hawks don't even have the cap room to play Teräväinen much in the regular season. McKenzie suggests that he'll go the the AHL. Makes more sense. At times it sounded like Chicago was just going to drop a 19-year-old on their second line which doesn't really feel correct.

I'm not so sure, they has Hanzus playing on their second line at the moment and he has something like 2 points in his last 25 games. I don't think Teuvo can be any worse than that even if he would struggle like Granlund in his first year. Pretty much anything is an improvement atm in Chicago.

I don't follow Chicago at all. Just in general it feels weird. He's not very mature even for a 19-year-old the last I saw him. Odds are, it'll take a couple of years.
That aside, I think Kane is a good model for him on the ice. Not saying that Teuvo is a star like Patrick but they're honestly not dissimilar as players.

IMO, i just can't see Seiloff being an everyday NHLer, at least not beyond a few years. Theres parts of his game that remind me of Barrett Jackman, but Jackman put up points in Junior and in the early parts of his career before settling in to a more defensive role.(this was emphasized in the comments made by BACKCHECK!!!) Seiloff seems to have no ability with the puck, other than a good first pass, and his rambunctious style combined with his somewhat average size probably means he will be hurt most of the time-and will never play at 100%. He's not the worlds greatest skater either.
All that being said, he would be fun to watch if he could find a way. Feaster and Weisbrod were sure high on him.

I think the recent health issues with Sieloff have certainly increased my doubts. Not many 20 year old players can recover and make a career out of hockey after losing an entire year of development at such a pivotal age.
He's got a long road ahead of him. He was my favorite pick from that draft.

For the record, I wanted Girgensons, and would have taken him hands down over anyone else available at that spot.
