And if we get Ekblad, Bennet, Dal Colle or Draisaitl they immediatly become our best prospect. I don't think there is a lot of losing to be done for us in this draft.

Yeah I hope Burke isn't dead set on a defenseman as you can never have too many good centers in your organization.

And even if you could the surplus just then become currency that you can use in the pursuit of something else.

Burke says the first thing he decided when he took over the Leafs was that they had to get a stud defenceman, because every contender needs one. I doubt his opinion has changed. He's also shown he's perfectly willing to give up what it takes to get the player he wants. Wouldn't be surprised at all to see him make a move for Ekblad. However, it would probably take more than Baertschi or Gaudreau to move from 5th to 1st. And keep in mind that GMs don't demonstrate the same loyalty to players drafted by their predecessors.

I really don't want to move any of our top tier prospects to move up to number 1. Just draft where we land. Even though MacKinnon would be so awesome in a flames jersey I am much happier with Monahan, Poirier, and Klimchuck. This organization is showing there is some prospect depth but we can't mortgage that to move up 3-4 spots.

No freakin way! Sven I would be ok with but giving up a guy who's skill and hockey IQ reminds scouts of Wayne Gretzky would be beyond stupid. He is the Flames best prospect and nobody you will get in this draft is worth trading him. I would not trade Johnny straight up for the 1st overall this year, that is how sure I am he will be a star. No way.

To be clear:
Gaudreau's ceiling >> Baertschi's ceiling.
Neither are a clear shot to get there, but Johnny has superstar qualities. Sven is the more tradable asset to me, although I do think there's a good chance he becomes a top 6 player in the league. But if Johnny pans out, then you've traded away an absolute gem, cause he's gonna be dynamite if he does.

I don't think we should trade up, I would rather just draft where we land. If anything, I'd trade for another draft pick and get Fleury if we're that desperate for a defenseman.

Why would Burke be in search of a stud defenseman? We have one. We have two actually.

Because we need them to not be exiting their prime when we're ready to compete, we need them to be about to enter it. I also think it's a little too early to call Brodie a stud defensemen. I think he's a good 3 or a solid 2 eventually. I don't know if the answer is Ekblad, but we still have the D-man question.

The conventional definition of 'stud defenceman', and the one I'm sure Burke was referring to, is a physical, 25+ minute playing dominant d-man. There might be 10 or 12 such players in the league. Gio will be a supporting player by the time the pieces are in place for the Flames to be a contender, and Brodie is a nice player but he's not a Pronger/Niedermeyer/Chara/Doughty.

And it's typically the same people that want to trade all of our players to have as many draft picks as possible.
Trading Gaudreau to move up a few spots to take an 18 year old defenseman would be beyond stupid.

I don't want to trade our best prospects to get a lesser known quantity. Sure the likes of Gaudeau and Sven aren't knowns either, but both have more development time and arguably have a higher or just as high a ceiling as a top 2. The floor could be lower with those two, but IMO that shouldn't even be considered. Keep what we have and keep stockpiling the cupboard. Pretty good chance we land up top four anyway and the difference there just doesn't really warrant selling the farm.

Gaudreau is talented for sure, but he's still a major long shot to be an NHLer.

I disagree that he is a major long shot. The way he has gotten better every year to absolutely dominate college hockey at 20 years old I think he makes the NHL. No guarantee he will be anything more than a Gerbe type but he gas the smarts, speed, and hands to also top out as a slightly lesser Patrick Kane

How is our top prospect a "major long shot?"

I would do Gaudreau for Reinhart or Ekblad, and I'm one whose been hesitant about Ekblad. Gaudreau is crazy talented, but he's got a long way to go. Ignoring size (which is the obvious issue) I still think he's going to have a pretty rude awakening when he starts pro hockey as a result of fitness and nutrition.
We'll see. This is all moot anyway, because that pick isn't going to be traded.

I like the positive thinking but we can't expect him to be Patty Kane lite yet. Maybe thats his ceiling....maybe....but I think its more like somewhere between Paul Byron - Patrick Kane.
I expect he lands somewhere in between those players and i'll be very happy if he becomes a mainstay with our club in some capacity.
