The two year term would ensure he's still an RFA at expiration and he can earn a bigger, longer-term then.

He might get a little more money just because they'll need to hit the salary floor next year, so you might as well slightly overpay the guys who have already bought in to the team's philosophy than to significantly overpay a couple of free agents in July just to boost the payroll.

I think the last few games he's actually been a lot more physical and he's not getting pushed around as much. It takes a little longer for a big lanky body like his to fill out. I think he's gonna be a lot better than Moss, hell he's already better than him.

I like the Niewy comparison , he has a long ways to go but his hands/offensive awareness seperate him from a Moss type.He controls the play well ,distributes the puck well and has some slick moves.
The big question is can he keep improving his game ,or will he peak at a 3rd liner.

As ridiculous as the Nieuwendyk comparisons are, the David Moss comparison is equally as ridiculous. David Moss was a horrible hockey player who managed to fluke his way into a career season that made people think he was okay. Colborne is at least a talented player who shows sights of being a very good player in both ends of the ice. David Moss never showed anything but being a middling role player. I can't think of a fair comparison, but Colborne is more Nieuwendyk than he is Moss, but not Nieuwendyk in the slightest.

I agree. I think Colborne is much more talented than David Moss. I just can't figure out who can we compare him to...but i think it is a bit too early to compare him with anyone. We haven't really seen a lot from him yet. I am sure Colborne still have a lot to show in the next few seasons. I am very excited to see his improvement though.

Nieuwendyk comparisons work when comparing playing style (good hands, good hand-eye co-ordination, big body) but not skill level. Colborne is like a bargain basement, free cycle, hand-me-down version of Nieuwy. When he gets involved in the physical game he is really effective. Why doesn't he do it all the time?

Still, there is potential with him. I like him on the wing. Wouldn't want to write him off being a centre in this league either.

I actually think Colborne plays a lot like Joe Thornton - and this comparison has nothing to do with offence by the way.

Thornton uses his size very effectively, but is not punishing (though he will drop the mitts now and then, and has the occasional hit (sometimes dirty). I see him use the body much like Thornton does. He is a few leagues below Thornton with his vision and skill of course, but from a physical perspective, I think it is a fairly decent comparison.

I will be very interested in seeing how he fills out and gains confidence in the NHL. I think he can be a guy that COULD play into the top 6. Right now, I think he wouldn't make the roster of few teams as a 4th liner at least. I think he has come far enough to think of him as a legitimate NHL'er. No idea how far he can work his way up though - I think he has enough upside that it may be extremely foolish to trade him at this point.

Stat does not show it. It's the way he plays lately as a winger that impresses a lot of people. He's been good on the board and he's not afraid to use his body. Unlike when he was a centre, he's more afraid to commit mistakes defensively.

We don't really need him at centre with Monahan, Backlund, Stajan anchoring the top three lines and Knight, Granlund, Jankowski, and Arnold in the pipes. We do need size at wing badly so Colborne helps even more there. I think it makes sense for him to stay on the wing.

I would say there are flashes of Rob Neidermayer in there from what i've seen. Which would be a home run for what we gave up to get him.

Started on the left side, has been lining up on the right side. Playing the wing is a pretty fluid position anyways and the Flames are sorely lacking on right handed shots.

Maybe he can turn into a Hanzal type player? I feel like he can show a little more grit with the size he has.
