Ah, you think that now, but in June, 2019 when Ekblad is hoisting the cup in a Flames uniform, you'll be glad

Depending on who is running the Draft. I'll go with Burkes comments about who the untouchables are. They were Monahan and Gio.
I agree with most of everyones prefered list of untouchables like Backlund, Hudler (my personal favorite) etc etc..
But if Burke can utilize these players as assets to improve the team I think they'll be moved.

Doubtful, with your plan we'll be in a perpetual re-build.

I would much rather add something to our 5th overall pick to move up than try to package a huge deal to pick twice in the top 5 in this years draft.

My thesis is that with the likes of Gaudreau, Poirier, Klimchuk and Granlund in the system we could afford to give up a Backlund for a potential superstar d-man.

I see what you're saying, and it has merit but it's just too much of an overpayment when we are already picking at 4-7. If we didn't have a pick in the top 10 then maybe. No, even then it's too much.

Three of those four players aren't centres. Unless your thesis is Granlund is ready to replace Backlund?

If we're 4th too, there's a pretty good chance Bennett or Reinhart will be there. Monahan is your #1 next year - start Bennett or Reinhart #2 and see where things go.
We have loads of players that project to be 2nd, 3rd line (with some potential for 1st) but I feel at this early stage of the rebuild elite talent should be priority #1. With this draft we could solidify our top two centers and a franchise defenseman.

Than what are we going to do with McDavid?

Really, you wouldn't? If you could trade the for 1st overall without trading your other first rounder you'd have to take a long look at that deal. But the proposal is alot of quantity for quality though. Doubtful Buffalo gives up a potential star player for decent but no top end pieces.

Move one of Reinhart or Monahan to the wing. An excess of talented centres isn't a problem, it's a luxury.

As much as I really like both of them, I have a hard time imagining both Baertschi and Gaudreau being part of the long term plans.
So, if Gaudreau joins the Heat in the playoffs and continues to dominate at the AHL level, I would become more willing to package Baertschi in a deal to get the top pick from Buffalo (though I would still prefer to wait and bit longer and see how they both develop).

If the Hockey Gods are astronomically kind enough to us to get McDavid, we're in a position to deal away a NHL-ready 2nd/3rd line center for assets, like an NHL-ready D-man or big goal-scoring winger.
Wouldn't it be awesome if we got Ekblad and McDavid from winning the lottery twice? Only the league wouldn't complain at all because unlike the Oilers, out of all the suck teams we're probably the most deserving and will be most likely to turn those two prospects into superstars.

If you can trade Baertschi as one of the main pieces for the 1st overall you do it. Very very likely the player you get 1st will be much better than Baertschi.

What I'm saying is that giving up on Backlund when he is just reaching his peak, puts our rebuild back a year or two and we'll be in a perpetual state of picking top five. There comes a time when you stop giving away your vets for futures.

Look, I love Backlund and I'd like to keep him, but he's not the key to whether our rebuild is successful or not.

No one player will be the key to this, or any other, rebuild.
Greater than the sum of the parts. Backlund can be a key PIECE of that.
