Giguere could play another 10 years and it would still be irrelevant since he is a UFA after the season and will not be re-signed.

The Avalanche have signed Berra to a three year extension and according to Roy, he will get his first start in Winnipeg on Wednesday against the Jets.

Man, they really believe in him?

So strange to show such a (sudden?) interest in him. I'd have to imagine he wasn't exactly untouchable in St. Louis all these years, was he?

While we are happy about getting a 2nd round pick for Berra. I'm convinced Berra will be an excellent goalie for years to come. If Roy believes in him it's a done deal.

Easier to scout him in North America. And they probably put more emphasis on how he performed in the NHL vs the Swiss league and World Championships.

I'm not sure why people are totally surprised. I always thought he showed more upside than Ramo but with more correctable flaws in his game. If he can stay a bit calmer in his net and play a bit more positionally he can be a good goalie. Obviously he has the raw size and reflexes. With a good goalie coach he can still turn it around and be a solid NHLer.

I'm happy to take the 2nd since we have Ortio, Gillies and Ramo still in the fold. But it does make sense to me why Colorado was interested.

Does Roy know something about Berra that we dont? Could you imagine if this was the Kiprusoff trade in reverse?

It sounds like it is Allaire that was primarily interested/familiar with him and he just moved to Colorado this year.

So perhaps it was Nonis/Burke that he couldn't convince to make a move on him rather than a sudden interest.

But that is based on hearsay that it was Allaire that liked him.

I think it is, like it was pointed out most of Berra's problems can be fixed. However, I'm not sure how you fix his glove hand and teach him to absorb shots.

But when does he even get a chance to prove it? Varlamov is a year younger and signed for five more years. Do the Avs see Berra taking the starting job from Varlamov? I certainly don't.

What legal issues? I thought the case in its entirely was dropped. There's no need to even bring it up anymore, unless he gets involved in a civil case I suppose.

I have watched a lot of young goalies over the years and there is nothing that showed me that Berra will ever be a consistent goalie. Good luck with him Av's.

Varlamov isn't going to play all 82. And injuries do happen. Why is it weird for them to want to have a reasonably young duo to move forward with for years. Obviously Varlamov will be the starter.

There's nothing wrong with a young duo for the future. My point was that it will be difficult for him to ever prove that Roy or Allaire knew something nobody else knew. It's also unlikely that this this be a situation reminiscent of the Kiprusoff trade given the likelihood that he will be a backup for the foreseeable future.

True. So when Berra steals Varlamov's job and goes on to lead the Avs in pretty much every statistical category then I'll be proven wrong I guess.

If Berra becomes better than Ramo and Ortio then we made a mistake. However, I believe that Ortio will be the best of the 3.

What if we use the 2nd to draft a guy that becomes Marc-Edouard Vlasic?

Not really. There's little evidence that Berra would've become that in our organization, so it's a moot point.

On top of that, what if the 2nd rounder becomes a first pairing defenceman? We go back to winning again?
