Interesting, but it would be good to know where other non-playoff teams compare.
On the surface though, that screams lack of talent as opposed to coaching. It's not like this team gets schooled every night. We definitely lack established top line talent though.

Frequent lurker with an observation... Moon has the following opinions:
-Wideman is terrible defensively (only slightly exaggerated, I'd say)
-Russell is terrible defensively (I'd say he's decent)
-Flames have no defensive system
Moon, is it possible you expect too much defensively?

Seriously, come on man, the team which was already pretty limited on talent to start the season has lost 213 games to injuries (12th most in the NHL). Players who have missed more than 10 games this season:
Cammallari
Stajan
David Jones
Blair Jones
Giordano (missed 18 games and is still 2nd in points on the team)
Glencross
Wideman
Russell
Ramo
Players who have missed between 5 and 10 games:
Monahan
Galiardi
Stempniak
And now Hudler, the Flames top point producer, has missed 4 games so far.
On top of all this is a team that has had 4 different goaltenders in net this year, 2 of which hadn't played a game in the NHL prior to this season, and the other two being made up of a career backup and one that hadn't played in the NHL since 2008-2009 (and had 48 career games in the NHL prior to this season).
Taking all that, I really don't know how you could say Hartley could be doing any better with what he has to work with. This team puts in the effort more consistently than in the past 5 years. Everyone can see this, fans, analysts, the GM, and other team's coaches and players. Everyone except for you it seems.

No team is competitive EVERY night - see Anaheim last night.
But 40 1 goal games by the Flames this season says they are quite competitive night in and night out - just not good enough to win most of those games.

Man, playing nothing but pond hockey with however many rookies in our lineup and we are still able to keep games close and win once in a while?
Moon, you must think we have some damn good prospects, hey bud?

Russell was horrendous for the first 10 games of the season. Completely lost, made some brutal mistakes and seemed to always be at fault for goals against.
However he has improved significantly (coaching? learning system?) and it has made him at least ADEQUATE defensively, which, is what is allowing him to have success offensively. He has clearly learned the SYSTEM implemented by Hartley and because of that he can quickly move the puck or make smart pinches/join the rush because he has been taught how to take care of his own end.
Just one example of the coachings staff impact on a player over the course of this season.
