Default Lacrosse Resources

A friend asked me to help him coach lacrosse this year. He coached my boy last year in hockey, and they got along great.

I don't know a lot about the game, and would like to increase my knowledge.

I am looking for any online resources.

Thanks

I have coached it in the past, I know the CLA had a great coach workbook and drill resource available from the association.
I assume its box lacrosse? If so, please remember that it is more similar to basketball from an offense/defense standpoint. Its not hockey. With the transition game to man to man d or zone coverages. Picks, pick-and-roll and isolation plays. I found myself studying basketball drills a lot.

What age group are you coaching? I was an assistant coach last year and it was lots of fun. I am not much help on what to do since I played my entire life I pretty much just winged it. It really made me realize how important giving back to the sports community is if you can.

Yes it is box lacrosse.

He is 8, second year tyke.

I am looking forward to it, but want to build up some base of knowledge. Luckily the head coach knows his stuff.

Oh man Tyke would be so hard! I can only coach kids who have an understanding already I don't think I would do well with starting from scratch. Reffing Tyke was always hilarious though because they all run around in a pack to get the ball you will have a blast!

At that age really just have to focus on scooping the ball and passing and shooting. Here is a good site to browse

Thanks........for nothing.......

Tyke, isn't as bad as mini tyke. There is still some mob mentality, but the coaches were pretty good with getting them to understand spacing on the floor. I am looking forward to it, as is the boy.

He loves it, loves the physical nature of the game.

Thanks for the link.

You quoted me too soon I was adding a link!! Please start teaching the kids how to do bounce shots and no side arm underhand junk (not that they would be able to yet). It frustrates me to no end that the NLL has taught everyone to avoid those two shots and every teenager wants to throw side or sub shots.

Also have a stick in your hand more than your boy does. He will pick up the game a lot faster than you will and growing up I always enjoyed playing catch with my dad while he was able to use a lacrosse stick more than when we had to switch to baseball glove for him.

Also also learn about stringing sticks if possible. The number 1 problem kids have is that they get sticks from the store that are strung terribly from the factory. Now that Mountain Edge Lacrosse is gone I am not sure if anywhere strings them before putting them on the shelves. I can help you out if you want as well with this

Yeah I saw your edit, thanks.

He coach last year was all about the over hand shots, he knew the game really well, played a high level.

Funny that you post about the stick, I bought one last year so we could play catch in the back yard, would do it 2-3 times a week. He was 7 then and was better than me (little eff'r).

Also, we went to some friends and his boy is a bantam player my son brought his stick. First thing this boy did was restring it for him.

When I first started out my dad would follow the instructions and string a stick for me.(he was all hockey never played lacrosse) I had some very laughable pockets but it was a good way to both learn. As I grew up I started tinkering a lot more with the stringing side of things then I went on to work at a lacrosse store and did it all day everyday. The best thing you can do for those kids is take them all first day of practice and take them home and fix them.

If you want to learn the basics let me know we can grab some sticks and some beers and crunch some out.

bump, fundmark, we had some friends over the other night. Their boy is 14ish, and plays, is going to Alberta Summer Games. He re-strung the boy's stick, and it is night and day.

I was going to learn, but I reckon I will just make him teach the boy.
