I would assume there'd be some protocol as to whether if you make the early landing call, you're committed. Anyone know?
Nope. Captain can do what he wants... but this is an unlikely scenario because if you've got a problem serious enough that you've turned back it's unlikely that you'll fix it because you've exhausted all possible options, and if you do fix it you might not have enough fuel to continue on your original flight plan. They're hundreds of miles from an airport anyway, there's no "landing" happening. Here's how late you can abort. Literally inches off the ground...
If the dimensions of a piece of wreckage of 24 by 22 meters it would have to be the fuseage split open like a banana peel because there is no part on a 777 close to that size.
Malaysian government has reportedly brought in an "expert" to try to locate the missing flight
Quote:
Malaysian media reported that Ibrahim Mat Zin, a famous bomoh (shaman) also known as the Raja Bomoh Sedunia Nujum VIP, performed a prayer at Kuala Lumpur's airport on Monday to help locate flight MH370, allegedly at the invitation of one of the country's top leaders.
"I think the plane is still in the air or has crashed into the sea," he was quoted by Free Malaysia Today as saying.
I don't like to judge the customs and cultures of others, but in this case.... the shaman thinks the plane could still be in the air? How?
It's not like it's on puppet strings being danced about from the aliens in Independence Day, and is currently en route to the E.T. Children's Festival somewhere in Alpha Centauri.
I'm going to look at Malaysia a little differently after this whole fiasco. Especially if the military radar bit about the plane being hundreds of km away turns out to be completely false.
Explains why theycallmebruce is all crazy and stuff.
LOL, I prefer to think of myself as eccentric!
Well, no surprise at all that the Malaysian government would consult a Bomoh LOL. They're more witch doctor than shaman. Their claim to fame is keeping a spirit call the "Toyol" in a bottle to terrorize people. Yes, seriously. This is coming from a country that turned their national museum into a paranormal ghost museum (and only changed it back to normal because of the severe ridicule by the populous).

It's the government that's the problem. Malaysia the country is actually really awesome to visit. The general public are pretty level headed and smart. The Government, on the other hand...

Sometimes you may be asked by the ATC to turn the transponder off if they're doing testing or are having issues with their ground equipment. On my flight last week CYBW tower asked for us to turn off our transponder on approach as they were getting weird blips... An exception to the rule but you do what you need to do.
What were you flying? Some of the military "mode 4's" have been a nightmare lately I'm told.

Assuming they are elected, hows does such a level headed and smart public keep electing a bunch of ######s for a government?

So, it's like Alberta!

That's because they are NOT elected. Malaysia is not a democracy. There are elections, for show, but the incumbent will always win.
Thanks, I guess it's safe to assume the military actually runs the country. hopefully the public gets up in arms over them loosing a friken 200 ft long airplane with 239 people on it and then making up stories of where it is to the point of replacing them.
Maybe the plane is inside the US military asset named the “Sky Dreadnought,” supposedly it is undetectable with radar and the cigar-shaped craft is almost 3,000 feet long, has a gravity-manipulation system and travels ten thousand an hour.
