Man, awful start for the Jays... Taubenheim walked four in the second inning, Zaun allows a run by missing the pitcher on a routine throw back to the mound. 4-0 Chicago.

Edgardo Alfonzo called up from AA. Will play 2B
Aaron Hill to play SS.
A.J. Burnett placed on 60 day DL (injury worse than originally thought or does that sound about right? How long has he been out so far?) to make room for Alfonzo

Players can be played on the DL retroactively, meaning that this is just par for the course, it also frees up a spot on the 40 man for Alfonzo.
He was placed on the 15 day DL on April 22, meaning that he has to spend at least another 21 days on the DL in order to be eligable to come back. He wasn't really slated to come back until the ASB anyways, I don't think it is any worse.

I'm surprised they didn't stick with Figueroa at 2nd. Did a decent job Sunday, I thought (other than the routine line-drive that ripped its way right through his glove).
Anyway, this Boston series is huge. It would be a excellent time for the Jays to finally get a series sweep.

I haven't even heard anything about AJ's progress. Good to hear (I suppose) that he's slated to return this summer.

He started throwing from a mound yesterday, but he will be making rehab starts before he returns to the big club.

Well, the Jays are looking pretty good here tonight! 6-0 so far. That HR that Wells hit actually looked as if it might not go, is the roof open? Perhaps it got knocked down.

Wells with a ridiculous over the shoulder catch at the wall...fearless.
6-1 Jays.

Jays win a thriller, 7-6.
B.J. Ryan is too good.

Great effort to pull out the 7-6 win. Clutch double by Molina, and then great closing effort by Ryan. Too bad they couldn't hold the W for Halliday, though.

Some comments from last night's game....
- I thought J.P. overpaid significantly for a closer with 42 career saves, but B.J. Ryan has been worth every penny. He's been worth at least 5 extras wins this season over last year...
- Edgardo Alfonzo is mere shadow of his former self... and hopefully a temporary replacement. I have to wonder if he was on the juice until last season (look at his career #'s).
- I like having both Zaun and Molina in the line-up, but it severely limits the ability to make late-inning substitutions. The Jays lost their DH last night after pinch-running for Molina in the 8th... and that's a risky move in a tie ballgame!

This thread should be renamed to "Jays '06" or something like it. It has evolved far beyond a one hitter by a great young pitcher.

Yeah it is hard to beleive Alfonzo is "32 years old", most players don't completely lose it by that age, but they've started declining a touch, especially former all stars.
There is just no way he is 32 years old, and what a waste of a lineup spot, I bet our pitchers could hit better than him right now. He clearly has lost it.
I'll echo the sentiments above, what a thrilling game.
Gibbons pulls out all the stops including pinch running for Bengie Molina which, if BJ had blown the save and this game went to extras (Or Hillenbrand not get a hit), he would have had to bat as our bench was now empty (with DH rule, the DH cannot move to a position on the field in the AL or you lose the DH for the game, Zaun, our DH replaced Molina @ Catcher).
Even though I'm not sure the Jays have quite what it takes to make it into the playoffs, they've been absolutely a blast to watch this season.

Ryan is a stud, I'll overlook the game on the weekend, everyone has a bad game once in awhile. It's great to see Wells in mid-season form as he usually takes some time to get going (what a catch last night!!!!) Lots of fun to watch again. Too bad the Toronto public don't show up for week day games.

Did Molina have two doubles in last nights game. If so thats unreal. He is the slowest man in baseball and the fact that the Sox failed to hold him to a single on two occasions is hillarious.
But the guys that J.P. added who have played have been pretty good, Overbay, Glaus, Molina, Ryan have all been good additions. IIRC last year the first Jay to reach 10 homeruns was Hillenbrand and that wasn't until the series just before the Allstar break. This year Wells, Rios, and Glaus have already hit 10 by the end of May and Overbay sits at 8 and should reach 10 easily by the break, and Hillenbrand could too. Than factor in that Zaun and Molina have given 9 from the catcher DH position and this team is miles ahead of last years team from a power standpoint. Which I think that lack of power hurt them last year as they could get lots of hits, but no knockout blow to blow innings open. How many times would the string together 5 hits in an inning last year only to score two runs. Next inning the other team would step up and get three with one swing of the bat.

Their team batting stats are very impressive: .299 batting average (1st in MLB by a considerable margin), .492 slugging % (also 1st in MLB), 3rd in doubles, 4th in home runs, 5th in runs scored, 1st in sacrifice flies, and dead last in strikeouts (233, by far the fewest). I think the last number is the most impressive -- they hit for power, but not at the expense of strikeouts. This has allowed Gibbons to hit-and-run A LOT, even with guys like Molina on-base (as he did last night).
I think they're legitimate contenders if they can:
a) keep their pitchers healthy,
b) get a strong 2nd half from Burnett
c) get servicable middle relief from Frasor, Chulk, Speier, and Scho.

Even that game though its not like he came out and walked batters or got lit up. IIRC, one legitimate hit, one squibber and one seeing eye single.
That'll happen in baseball just because of the law of averages.

yep. And just imagine if we still had last year's closer.
We'd be out of the race already.
