Unsigned 2012 draft picks
Unsigned 2nd rounders from 2012 currently: Dansk (CBJ), Pokka (NYI), Aberg (NSH), Sutter (WPG), Blujus (TBL), Thrower (MTL), Winther (DAL)
https://twitter.com/coreypronman/sta...68560789999616
These players don't need to be signed until June 1, but anything of interest for us here to throw a draft pick at the respective team and see if we can pick up a player that's further along in their development? Pokka/Blujus/Thrower are dmen, Aberg appears to be too small, Sutter (as much as I don't want to say it) appears intriguing with his size/grit/skill, Winther too small for what we want going forward.

Dansk. Never hurts to have too many tenders in your system. But cbj will be signing him.

Caley on HF keeps a pretty nice list of all prospects that need to be signed by June 1st: (spoiler for size)

Aberg doesn't need to be signed yet no? Drafted out of Europe.
Him and maybe Thrower are the only ones I'd be interested in. Wonder when(if?) we'll sign Kulak.

The 4 years to sign players drafted out of most European leagues didn't start til the 2013 draft.
So yes Aberg needs to be signed by June 1st.

The Flames should sign Culkin and Kulak and let Gordon walk? With Breen, Martin, Cundari, Billins and Smith possibly not being re-signed the Flames should have spots available for Culkin and Kulak.

When do contracts expire? I guess what I am wondering is if the Flames don't sign the above is there a period of time between expiring and July 1.

That's a typo. He is -11 this season. -34 came last season when Vancouver was the worst team in the WHL.

well he's a -11 this year with 55 points in 66 games. The Vancouver team he plays for are a middling kind of team so he's not well under the team average, there could be more at play.
Unfortunately I don't have any game insight though so maybe someone else can help there.

Thrower and Sutter both look like they are worth a flyer.
There are a few interesting names on that list actually.
I would try to sign Zharkov. He played junior in NA and never really transitioned well to the KHL last year, so maybe he would prefer the AHL route. He's a LW with some size.
Plus, any time you can do something that might make Edmonton look bad is worth it.

All current contracts expire June 30, but the Flames can sign contracts now that don't start until next season.
They could sign Kulak, Culkin, and Gordon to ELCs that start in 2014-15, and have them play in Abbotsford (once their junior seasons end) on ATO (amateur try-out) deals.
For the players currently under contract, the Flames have exclusive negotiating rights with the players until the end of June (I don't know if the new 4-day "discussion" period prior to free agency changes that). If the player is a pending RFA, the Flames would still have matching rights to any offer sheets after July 1, so long as they make a qualifying offer to the player in time.

From that list, Linus Ullmark, drafted in the 6th round in 2012 by Buffalo, looks to be a goaltender prospect worth keeping an close eye on. He's currently playing for MODO with a 0.931 SV%.

I'd gamble on Thrower if he's available (though I doubt he'll be. It'd be a huge mistake IMO to do so). I like his ability and potential. He seemed to rebound quite well after a bad year.
He reminds me a bit of a PK Subban as a small-ish physical offensive defenceman. For the cost of a contract spot, it'd be a huge prospect to add for basically free.

With respect to the Flames' own prospects:
I am fairly confident the Flames sign Culkin and Kulak - getting fairly weak in defensive prospects.
Anyone think they sign Gordan? I am hoping they do - I think this kid has at least a decent AHL future, and maybe more. Many felt he was a huge 'steal' when the Flames drafted him, but has probably underwhelmed a bit (last year increased his point totals, but his goals were nearly halved, this season looks back on track, but you would figure he would be scoring at a higher clip with his age).
