I just think the discussion is too focused on Colorado "seeing something" in Berra and the fact that Giguere's health is uncertain and they needed someone who can sit on the bench this season gets overlooked. I'm sure it's a combination of current needs and potential but the potential part of the equation is getting inflated here.

Could be, I obviously can't say I know what their management was thinking. Just seems like there were safer options out there, for minimal compensation throughout the day. Combined with the flashes of brilliance that we've seen from Berra, I don't think it's an invalid theory. I'd bet though, if you asked Sherman/Sakic/Roy, they'd agree with me. Nobody wants to admit they waited too long and had to overpay, even if that was the case

You have to look at each available goalie individually and see what parts make sense for Colorado. As far as I understand their situation, they needed someone who can play in an emergency but also someone who they can easily send to the minors if Giguere is healthy. Also, Berra has no contract for next year. He may cost you a second rounder but he brings no extra headaches for the team either.
Even though we're speculating somewhat, I think we may begin to see why Berra made sense for the Avs in the current situation without assuming that they see something extra special in him. They're planning for a long playoff run, they think they can overpay for some extra insurance. And potential.
But the fact that they overpaid doesn't mean that they know something the Flames don't. Just two teams in entirely different situations.

Makes some sense, could be some of both. I never though that the Avs 'know something the Flames don't'. They're seeing the same thing we're seeing, but maybe think they can do something with it.
You make some valid points, I just refuse to believe Sherman looked at Reto Berra as the best available rental insurance goalie right now and gave up a second for an insurance backup .

I don't believe they can send him to the minors now. After the Trade Deadline, you can only send down players who were recalled after the deadline.
Also, after the deadline, the NHL roster size limit is lifted, so there's no concern about wasting a roster spot on a third goalie.

Well you're misrepresenting me in the second paragraph. Not saying that potential didn't figure into it. I'm giving some thoughts as to what things might form the bigger picture. And you'd have to look at who actually was still available to determine how much better Colorado could have done if they only wanted someone for this season. Can't just pull out a list of names.
But again I'm not saying that was the only thing on their minds, just that this aspect has been overlooked in the discussion. They didn't need to trade for him right now and overpay if they only liked his potential.

Thanks. Well he's still remarkably headache free for Colorado beyond this season.

Great return on Berra, didn´t think any GM was looking to acquire him, but I guess Greg Sherman and the brain-trust in Colorado had other thoughts. Does this mean Burke has been impressed by Rämö, or was it simply an offer too good to turn down?!
I'd like to see Ortio get a few more starts and show what he's got. This is a terrific opportunity for him to showcase himself at the ultimate level. Would be cool if he turned out to be the new Kipper. Gotta love those fins.

Just saw Reto Berra tonight at cowboys. Thought it was odd he hasn't gone to Colorado yet

Not that odd. There's probably some immigration things he has to get settled with first. He would need a work visa and his current one would be for Canada. It takes a couple of days for a US one and until he gets it, he can't work for his US employer.

Both sides in the trade for Kipper were pleased in the end. We got a franchise goalie. SJ got a pick that turned into Vlasic.
Judging by our recent history of 2nd rounders I look forward to seeing what this year turns out at the projected 54th overall.

Just thought I would update this. The Avs are going to have Berra work with Allaire for the remainder of the season and are working on an extension for him. Definitely seems that Allaire played a major role and the Avs are looking at Berra as their future back up.

would make sense. Groin injuries are a goaltender's nightmare and Giguere's had tons of those.

Ortio in two games has showed better positioning and calmer demeanor. For the record I think Berra had backup potential but the Oilers were giving up 4th round picks for two backup goaltenders with more of a track record than Berra. A 2nd round pick is a steal and even Burke said he couldn't say no to that deal.

Giguere is going to likely retire. The fact still remains that the Avs gave up a 2nd round pick for who will be their backup.
Berra will not outplay Varlamov next season to push for a starting role. Av's probably sign Berra to a 2 year 1.5m per, I'm sure he will be happy with that.
