So if there's an item that says "Lightning skills deal 15% more damage", is that accounted for when you hover over an item and it compares it to the item you are wearing?
I would think not but am not sure.
Just trying to figure out if I have an item that has lower +Int (for example) than another so that when compared it says -4% Damage but I can expect +15% damage when most of my skills are lightning based that I'm making the right choice.
That's the impression I'm under. The stats with the orange diamond on them aren't used to calculate the changes when comparing items I believe.
You still got to be careful if you're stacking a lot of +lightning damage stuff that your base damage isn't taking too big of a hit. Would be pointless to have 50k damage with 100% additional lightning damage when you could just have 100k damage with "normal" items.
With this new patch it seems like choosing an elemental damage spec is the way to go. Boosts your DPS significantly but it is not calculated in your DPS.
The only thing I dislike about my wizard is arcane orb with frost orb is so overpowering because of the area damage it doesn't really make sense not to go cold. I suppose I can switch to meteor seeing how that seems to be a good build but the freeze it deals helps a ton.
Got my Wizard to 60 and then went from normal to master instead of hard.. can't just roll over anything now lol. Even though I went lightning stuff (I like the 10 chain lightning, and the thing that gives chance to stun with lightning) I can see how cold might be more useful, stuff damages me now.
EDIT: Oh and got a Legendary 2H Mace that does 1200+DPS and has the 9 level requirement thing, so I can use it at level 51! What classes can use 2H mace tho? Barb and Wizard?

But certainty is an absurd one.
Just used the Arcane orb that spins around to get all the way from 35 to 55.just kept it up and charged into groups of mobs.
Now that I am working on master, things are tough enough that it isn't really as quick as it was in hard.
I moved to blizzard as I like the lock down slow action of the cold.
Really have not much idea on other skills though. Been using familiar , magic weapon and armor, but haven't ever really used the 4 slot. Any ideas? What's that one that spins around called?

All can, if there's anything only a specific character can use it will be listed.
And because it took me an embarrassingly long amount of time, there's an option called Elective Mode that allows you to use any skill in any slot, if any of the new guys haven't found it yet.

You should try this build
Even though I'm fully spec'd in cold (+35% cold damage, +15% arcade orb dmg, +25% magic missile dmg) I decided to try it out and I was almost doing as much damage as my cold build. I have a friend who runs that build with the appropriate gear and he blows my damage out of the water even though we're both around 75k unbuffed

Oh and after getting all my characters up to level 60 (monk, demon hunter, wizard, barbarian) all with fairly similar gear, the wizard is by far the most destructive and thus fun to use. My monk is the most geared out of them all, but even with 20k less dmg unbuffed my wizard still tears though stuff so much faster at the same difficulty level. Of course this probably means that a wizard nerf will be incoming, as doing the opposite and making the rest of the classes as fun to play would go against Blizzard's philosophy
guess i have to try a wizard out then.....i still love witch doctor + bat with the passive skill that procs fetishes. then again i was the guy who ran around with like 20+ skeles back in d2
Tried that build and I am not a huge fan of the lack of AE clearing spells, but the single target damage is insane.
Hit 60, and shortly after, picked up a Thunderfury that is pretty nice
Increased my damage by 59%. I am sitting at 50k damage right now, but I still have all my Cain's Exp bonus armor on, so I think that will go up quite a bit once I get regular gear sorted out.
edit: With Shawnski's impromptu donations and a quick trip to the auction house, I am now up to 70k with 22% Arcane Torrent damage

You are very lucky to run across a socketed legendary weapon. Do yourself a favor and put the highest green gem you can in there and then find/craft/buy as much crit gear as possible. You'll be tearing through stuff then
Through all my characters I've probably found over a dozen legendary weapons so far and none have had a socket
For the guys that have all 5 classes, what is everyone's favorites? My monk is my main, but the wizard is quickly becoming my favorite. I find the barbarian the toughest to play and by far my weakest character.

One more comment on this build. I think it really shines when you add a weapon like Thunderfury, or similar effect, that creates some splash damage to surrounding targets.
Before I started using it, there was a constant annoyance having to specifically target individual trash mobs that were wandering around, but now that I have it, the build is dreamy.
Did a Butcher run today before work on Master, as I hadn't done anything really there, and it was like cutting butter.
I started a Torment run as well. I ran out of time, but the early indications were quite good.

That's odd. I have never used a non-socketed weapon with my DH until the most recent addition of the chicken bow. I think the reason might be the Sharpshooter build I was using stressed the importance of that extra 90% crit. I did add an emerald to the Thunderfury and have seen lots of 200k+ crits, so I am quite happy.
Unbuffed, at 71k damage. Still looking for + Arcane Torrent armor in a few locations if anyone comes across some they don't need. Have boots and hat right now.

Wizards have always been my go to character in most games like this.
In D2, I leveled a sorc to 99 virtually solo. Unlike in D3, D2 had serious penalties on EXP for a death. Leveling any char to 99 solo was pretty rare....
So yeah, right now my wizard is ~300K unbuffed, 400K buffed and rocks... approaching paragon 200. Heck, my enchantress did ~93K damage but I switched out her weapon to a Maximus, which has a nice summoning tank aspect.. but her damage is reduced to about 80K.
Long and short of it... I always like playing a wizard, and right now it works great. Waiting for Blizzard to f that up though...
