Let's assume the average chl game attendance is 3500 and tickets cost $20. That's $70,000/game times 34 games gives you nearly 2.4 million in revenue. Say you've got 15 players who use the tuition package for university at 10,000/year (probably high) that's 150,000. 6.25% of revenue... Seems pretty unfair.

It was a basic calculation. I didn't include revenue from concessions, merchandise, tv deal or the Memorial cup either.

If it was that simple you might have an argument.
Sadly, the restrictions placed on the CHL scholarship package are tight, and many end up not using it.

Well ... what do you know:
http://www.guelphmercury.com/sports-...ation-package/
Quote:
Previously, in addition to their billets and food being covered by the team, most players received $50 a week spending money, overage players received $150. The new system being put in place will see players reimbursed up to $470 a month for normal living expenses, such as entertainment, cell phone bills, food and gas.
An additional $1,000 will be made available for summer training purposes.
|
Quote:
First, a player now has 18 months after the end of what would have been his overage season to start using his education package, even if he doesn't play an overage season.
That means a player that leaves the OHL at 19 now has 30 months to take advantage of the package.
Also, in the past a player's education package became void if they signed an American Hockey League or National Hockey League contract. Now a player can sign an AHL deal and still retain access to his education package. Before they could only do so if signing with a lower pro league.
This matters to the many players who are not NHL signed and might be concerned about signing an AHL contract that could be short lived. In the past many had to decide whether it was worth signing an AHL deal and risk losing their education package. Now they can take the opportunity without the risk.
Numbers from a couple of years ago indicated just under 50 per cent of OHL players end up using their education packages in some way.

Without looking it up I would say 3500 on average is high for the Q. Also $20/ticket is high.
I'd say 2750 and $15 is closer to the average.
I don't know what travel in the WHL is like, but is think it would be akin to what Cape Breton faces. Closest rival is a 4.5 hour bus ride. Travelling to western Québec is an overnight bus ride to Montréal, stay a day and then continue on to Val d'Or. Usually there a day before the actual game. Hope to get a practice in, and then you're looking at cramming in 3 games in 4 nights and then long drive back.
Those hotel nights (I think the team spends about 40-42 nights in hotels) bus rental, etc all costs a pretty penny.
CHL teams don't make a huge profit.
Costs have to be drastically lower in the OHL where the leage is concentrated in southern Ontario, but for the Maritimes and is assume most WHL teams the cost is very expensive and most revenue goes to travel costs.

Not as familiar for the Q and the WHL... so I was using the OHL as my guide. They might spend 10-15 nights in a hotel all season. OHL teams make a pretty penny and the franchise value is appreciating like crazy.
EDIT: Should say that most teams are making money.. I'm sure there are a few that struggle, but even then they could be sold at a large gain if they could be moved to different markets (in the US or say a Cornwall or Hamilton area)

FWIW its worth - the QMJHL average attendance last year was 3574 (but it does get skewed upward by Quebec and Halifax, the median is pretty close to what you said).
Also didn't factor in any playoff revenue.
http://www.hockeyattendance.com/leag.../?sort=avg_att
OHL was about 4000, WHL was 4800.

Given that I think the CHL should have a united philosophy. Teams that make big bucks in the OHL shouldn't dictate player "salary" in the small markets of the other leagues.
I'll be the first to argue that the Q has too many teams, but I can't imagine how small the leage would be if the teams had to meet the "salary" requirements across the board.
Unless there is a CHL wide revenue sharing. But should the London Knights be propping up the Bathurst Titan?
I can't speak for the other leagues, but what the well run teams in the Q (even some that aren't) have a scholarship find for their players. That is in addition to the one sponsored by the league.
I can honestly say that I haven't heard any issues getting your scholarship money so long as you meet the minimum amount of games required and attend university.

The article that Chris Zelkovich wrote mentions how HNIC next season will resemble the current Rogers regional telecasts.

George Stroumboulopoulos is getting a new job it looks like:
“@TSNBobMcKenzie: Lots of talk @strombo will this week be named primary face/host of the other guys' nat'l package.”
“@TSNBobMcKenzie: And @CoachesCornerCBC is reportedly getting a new 2-yr deal. Sounds like Ron MacLean still involved but not as main man.”

Strombo should work good as host. Probably just keeping Coaches Corner alive for a bit more to ease the transition.

Well is there's a silver lining in all this it's seeing MacLean minimized. Possibly Nick Kypreos becoming a part of CC?

I wonder if Strombo just does CC and MacLean stays apart of the intermission stuff with Friedman and the SNET guys (the end of PJ is thankfully nigh)

I would have thought that Strombos next gig would be much bigger than a sports anchor.
It seems like an odd direction for him given his body of work up until now.

He really has nowhere to go but US broadcasting if you are expecting bigger than the host of HNIC.
