I'm boarding party so I get to play with some other toys than the c7 and SIG. But I love the SIG. 64 for 64 @ 25 metres the last 3 years running for me on my annual re-qual. But my favourite is the 870 assault shorty.
I hear the FN was a beast but it was before my time.
The c9 is bada$$ too.

Small update- the CAF fire Marshall and his team have officially begun their investigation.
The crew has done some interviews that should be coming out in the next 24 hours. Should provide a bit of insight about those long 4 hours. Boots melting to the deck while guys are waiting in ranks to take their turn going in to fight the fire and such..

Ok, here's why I'm jealous of you kids today.
In my day this was our short barreled fully automatic assault weapon
9 mm, couldn't hit a thing with it, oh yeah and the safety was extremely faulty and probably killed more shooters then shooties.
We always theorized that it would make a great bunker clearing grenade. You load it, charge it and throw it in and when it hits the ground it just starts firing on its own spinning around until the clip empties.

I meant to ask, we know by the news that one sailor was evacuated due to a hand injury and several others were being treated on the ship for smoke inhalation and exhaustion, Any word on crew injuries or is everyone pretty much ok now.

Nothing serious or I would have heard about it.
Just got word that there may or may not have been a real time man overboard during the event and quick thinking by one person to close the fuel line to the engine may have avoided a catastrophic event.
But that's hear-say at this point.

Yikes, but I think we can probably agreed based on what that ship is, it could have been way worse.

Just wanted to say thanks for the updates, and all the talk from knowledgeable military guys. Very interesting conversation, whether it's related to the OP or not.
The four hours on that burning ship sound like a nightmare to me. I'm with CC and UB - that scenario scares the pants off me. And to think of all the men who went that way during WW2, well words cannot adequately express how much I admire their courage during those times.
EDIT: Oh, and furthermore...Abolish the Senate and give that money to the armed forces/coastguard!

An interesting article showing how making these new AOR's a Made in Canada effort is 2x as expensive....
Quote:
Britain, for example, opted to build its four new naval supply ships much more cheaply, at the Daewoo shipyard in South Korea. The contract is for roughly $1.1 billion Cdn. That's for all four. By contrast, Canada plans to build just two ships, in Vancouver, for $1.3 billion each. So Canada's ships will be roughly five times more costly than the British ones.
But there's a twist. Canada's supply ships will also carry less fuel and other supplies, because they'll be smaller — about 20,000 tonnes. The U.K. ships are nearly twice as big — 37,000 tonnes. Canadians will lay out a lot more cash for a lot less ship.

Just the the RN's Merlin & our Sea Kings -we should have tagged on the the RN's order. Or at least outsourced the construction.

Saw that on the news lastnight. I like the idea of building our own boats but that I'd crazy expensive!

The first one is always super expensive. You have to build the facilities, order the materials, get new contracts in place and have a serious fudge factor room. The second is usually half as much then the third considerably cheaper. But usually the opposition of these type of projects don't mention that. They just throw out a number and say this process is too expensive.
It isn't necessarily cheaper to go with a foreign built vessel as once you get into having to maintain the vessel, Canadianize it ( radars, weapons, training personnel) it could end up being as expensive by the end cause you're paying the same amount for 3 of the type. It could actually be cheaper by the end of the third to build domesticly.
The key is tho, don't buy steel that has been laying around rusting for 25 years before you even start laying down the the ship. Like they did with the cpf's...
Also consider that the money spent domesticly is good for our economy rather than supporting another nations economy.

So, I have only a little experience with work done in Korea. A previous company I worked for had a client mandate that some of the scope be done in Korea. All the specs of how the work should be done with what material should be used were laid out clearly.
Despite that, we had a bolt fail and a lot of other issues with what they handed off to us. This isn't quite a case of you get what you pay for, and I am sure they have improved since, but I still don't see us building the ships in Canada as a waste of money when you combined it with other factors (i.e. Canadian jobs).
Again, I have limited experience with Korean work, but that one experience put me off for a long time.
