20 games to see what the kids are made of, This kid could be the deciding factor for the Flames if they try to resign Butler.

John Weisbrod once mentioned how you hope to get at least two NHL players from each draft - maybe one will be an impact player. The Bruins, unknown to them at the time, had a franchise altering draft in 2006 when they drafted 3 impact players - Lucic, Marchand and Kessel. He said A draft like that greatly accelerates a rebuild because you do in one draft what you realistically hope to do in 3 drafts

It would be awesome if 2011 was that draft for the Flames - Baertchi, Granlund, Wotherspoon and Gaudreau, not to mention Broissoit who was used to get Smid - may be too much to hope for 3 impact players, but 3 or 4 NHLers would be great

It is quite possible that 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 all produce at least 2 NHLers (it's early, but it's definitely possible) as did 2008. The question is: will we get some impact players?

By the way, the gold standard for the Flames is 1984:

Gary Roberts
Paul Ranheim
Brett Hull
Gary Suter
Jiri Hirdina

a powerhouse team was an inevitability after that

All these guys and Johnny Gaudreau and Billy Arnold.

Would the Flames, if they were so inclined, be able to assign Monohan to Abbotsford after the end of the regular season without worry?

I'm pretty sure it was pointed out in another thread (by Getbak maybe) that because Monahan wasn't a "paper transaction" to the Heat, he cannot be sent down for the playoffs even if his OHL team's season is over. I'll try to find the explanation.

I don't believe they can, because they would have needed to transfer him (on paper at least) to the Abby roster this week. They did not do so by the deadline.

Frankly the guy is likely going to be running on fumes after playing his first NHL season, so it makes sense not to extend it.

How about Spooner?

So do we know if he's actually going to be playing tonight? I know he was assigned, but I can't remember if Derek Smith was actually sent down to ABB, is he drawing in over the spoon?

i wonder if Tortorella would be ok if the Flames started all of the kids on Saturday night? Or does Hartley have to get a written note from NHL hq?

I don't see how we can avoid the nickname T-Spoon. The fates aligned on that one, it's as obvious as Granny.

I question the mental fortitude of anyone who doesn't believe that "T-Spoon" is the only real choice.

Bouma, Backlund, Reinhart, Brodie, Gio (he counts), Monahan, Wotherspoon and Granlund. I think we can count Knight and Hanowski as they had their debuts here too.

Absolutely love it.

EDIT: And Ortio.
Interesting that bolded are Darryl's picks, since I know he gets ripped alot.

And that Erixon trade is land slide win..... Granlund, Wotherspoon and you can add in Smid.

And as good as those players look in that list, doesn't even include Sven who could be called up and is still a top prospect..... and of coarse Johnny.

Feels pretty damn good

Yes, Smith was send down Wednesday morning. As Burke said, they wanted to come out of the Trade Deadline with a minimal roster so that any call-ups for injuries would count as emergencies and not burn off their 4 call-up limit.

If I'm Wotherspoon I'm not only ecstatic I'm playing in my first NHL game tonight which trumps everything, but I also get paired with a partner who brings his lunchbox to each and every game the same as Wotherspoon does.

You can question my mental fortitude all you like.

I like the nick, different strokes for different folks.

Realistically, names tend to naturally take on a life of their through the players' demeanour or on-ice performance. Monahan is a good example, many of us had him pegged as a wide variety of tags, but Moneyhands seemed to come out of nowhere after he started scoring at a torrid clip to start the season, and now there's no denying it's an appropriate nickname at this stage.

So, yeah.... I like T-Spoon. Maybe once he plays a few games, he'll be Killer/Chopper or some other one we wouldn't have expected.
