Snow is without a doubt the worst GM in the league but his boss is also arguably (the guy up north deserves mention) the worst owner in the league so would anyone be surprised if Snow survives one of the biggest asset management debacles in the last decade?
Just an absolute steal for the Habs. This move makes them serious contenders in the east IMO. Considering this is most likely a pure rental they didn't have to pay much

Absolutely it was a steal.
Not sure it makes them any better though. Offense isn't the Habs problem - they are small and get pushed around every night

RT @BDGallof: According to NHL source: MTL was ONLY offer for Vanek. Otherwise would have been no deal at all #isles #habs
I find it hard to believe the Penguins wouldn't have given up that 3rd they gave up for Stempniak or even a 2nd for Vanek but who knows with the Islanders gong show. I think that Snow handled the situation so poorly that GM's may have just thrown in the towel on dealing with him at the end and pulled their deals.
Snow probably just set an extremely high price because he had to make up for the Moulson trade, and GMs were unwilling to pay to price. When Snow didn't lower his demands, they went for other players like Gaborik instead and Snow was left to accept a low ball offer minutes before the deadline. Just horrible GMing, as always.
Too bad that Michael Grabner is still stuck with this joke of a franchise.
Hilarious news. I for one enjoy epic debacles that happen in the NHL (except for the Flames) and look forward to seeing what additional drama can come from this. Isles fans are absolutely livid. Unlike Oiler fans who I enjoy mocking, I genuinely feel bad for fans of a storied history like the Islanders. Tavares must be pulling his hair out and counting down his days.

Garth Snow learned from Mike Milbury management school. Totally opposite from the way Bill Torrey used to handle the NY Islanders back in the Islanders dynasty years.

It sounds like the original asking price was sky-high for Vanek and only came down near the end. Lots of other teams certainly had interest and kicked tires.
Did Snow panic and seize the only firm offer he had in hand? I have little faith in his ability as a GM, but that scenario seems pretty far fetched.
to be fair, he was ranked mid first round in some rankings. He's a nice prospect.
He is a B prospect at best.
Yes he has looked good in the Swedish Junior leagues and WJCs but hasn't been able to consistently put points up in the men's leagues. If you think Jankowski's offensive numbers are disappointing you will think Collberg's SHL numbers are as well for a supposedly highly skilled offensive force.
There's a very real possibility that the habs offer was the only legit one on the table by the time snow lowered his asking price. La, Pittsburgh, Minnesota etc could have already committed to their moves. We'll never know how the timing worked.
To say it was the only offer period, I would peg at around 0%

Everybody in the league knew that Snow's back was against the wall and that he had absolutely no bargaining position. On top of that, the price of rentals was at an all-time low while Snow's price was astronomical.
Montreal were probably just the last team to hang up the phone.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
The other important element to this trade is that Vanek isn't that great and every GM knows it. He usually has a stretch in every season where he gets really hot and that lasts for about 20-30% of the season in the rest of the season he is mostly average to poor from a dollar to production perspective. So yeah, if I'm Minnesota wanting to add, I definitely put Moulson higher than Vanek. I don't want a "star" with entitlement issues into my team (getting wasted at the Olympics the evening before your playoff game). I want a guy who's more committed. That's the thing, it seems that purely offensive players are just being sold off pennies on the dollar lately. This is a complete players game now.
With the systems and coaching now the line between winning and losing is so small that a goal scorer like Vanek sure, might get you 2 more wins over the course of an 82 game season. A systems player gets you the same or better at half the price and less alot of headaches for the coaches. Don't get me wrong, there's still lots of room for purely offensive guys, but that's only if you bring it consistently. Vanek, Gaborik, and the other elite scorers are on the market for a reason, they don't bring it.

Snow's asking price must have been way too high if the Habs were the only offer. Vanek would have been an amazing addition to the Kings, Ducks or Pens. You have to think the Ducks got rid of Penner for a reason, surprised they didn't fill that spot.

Maybe an unwillingness to retain salary?
