NHL revises Kovalchuk circumvention penalty. Devils will get 2014 30th overall pick
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Hearing the NHL has reversed part of its penalty against the Devils for cap circumvention (Kovalchuk contract)....
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
NHL will award Devils with the 30th pick in the Draft instead of the 1st round pick as usually determined. Also forgiving $1.5 mil of fine.

A fair decision in my opinion. The original penalty was too harsh and other teams got nothing for similar contracts.

not sure how this affects the lottery
Darren Dreger
@DarrenDreger
Needless to say, NHL teams are not happy with the leagues decision to let the Devils off the hook.

Had a feeling this would happen once Kovalchuk bailed to Russia.

Wonder if a playoff team gets into the lottery or do only 13 teams enter the lottery and everybody's odds go up?

wtf? How is this fair?
Knew it would happen, too. Typical of the NHL.
The Devils effed up by not giving up their 29th pick two drafts ago, and now they're off the hook!?
No wonder Lou didn't give it up. He knew the whole time.

Perhaps this was just a deterrent until the old CBA expired

Lou is some kinda miracle worker. Makes you wonder if there's any corruption surrounding the Devils franchise

No other teams were giving out 14 year contracts.
The Devils got what they deserved and somehow weaseled their way out. Looking back, it's obvious they knew it would happen.

Its a fair decision. The original penalty was a little too harsh IMO. It makes sense because Kovalchuk bailed on them before even half of the contract was fulfilled

I don't mind this ruling... had kovalchuk remained with the devils i would want the penalty to stick but it only seems fair given the circumstances

It was overly harsh to start with. Plenty of other teams did exactly the same thing but were not penalized.
It will still be a penalty to push them back 15 spots.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
All kinds of reax from NHL teams to the Devils story. Some accusing NHL of doing new ownership a favour....
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
More reax includes the assessment..teams that didn't break rules punished retroactively on cap recapture. Team that did, is not punished...
Pure bull####.

The Devils made the Stanley Cup Finals with Kovalchuk... who cares if he's with the team anymore.
