And that's why residents shouldn't be consulted on this type of thing.

It's probably the engineer in me but I kind of like it. Function over fashion. I hope all the materials are as thin as they can get away with so it looks like a toothpick bridge. That and what kid doesn't like a bouncy suspension bridge?

That's a problem with Eau Claire that is disappointing to see continued. To access the water front you feel like you are trespassing down some underbuilt awkwardly connected pathway.

I don't know if I'd call them ugly. They are very basic and uninspired for sure. That said, you need to build three of them, and there isn't a lot of money to go around, and you need to deal with higher environmental standards and engineering standards for construction vs. what you had before, and they are trail system bridges that aren't really key infrastructure pieces. I don't think going with the proven simple design is that much of a bad thing.
I think allowing the public to vote on features like support beams or railings is kind of dumb though - let the experts handle it and get a cohesive design together.
I also don't like the colours options at all, based entirely on the maintenance other bridges in this city (don't) get when it comes to paint. Look at any of the older pedestrian overpasses over 16th ave which are rusty white and grey looking, or the one over 14th St. in Hillhurst (rusty green) or the bridges in bowmont park (rusty green and white). Whereas the new red pedestrian bridge over bow trail looks great and shouldn't show rust as badly. Hell, go with something other than red then, but the gross shades of green that become very visibly stained and dirty looking is awful, and white will just look awful when it gets dirty and starts the orange rust streaking.

Totally agreed. This site should have a straight-line pathway from the Peace Bridge to the corner of Eau Claire Avenue and 6th Street, preferably lined with retail/restaurants.

Disagree. I think it should be illegal to paint anything brown in Calgary. It's dusty/brown enough as is, don't need it more so. Go with white...it's timeless.

Fully agree. The residential towers in Eau Claire are about as close as you can get to having the suburbs in downtown. We need to work towards making the riverfront an active place for the whole city, not a peaceful retirement resort for rich seniors.

White is too easy to tag with a black Sharpie unfortunately.

We'd live in a pretty sad place if we our primary concern with infrastructure design was graffiti avoidance.
Plenty of other cities use white and light colors and seem to survive just fine.

I'd say the Eau Claire Market and GWL mega projects will do a very good job with permeability, public uses and strong ground level interaction.

I think while the Market portion definitely looks like it will be awesome, the rest of the waterfront doesn't really have a lot going for it apart from the bike paths. All the buildings facing the river are fenced-off condos or colder buildings...nothing really inviting you to hang around. The GWL project isn't along the river, and will be blocked off by these condos.
How nice would it be if that whole strip from the Louise Bridge to the new Eau Claire Market, was (eventually) lined with cafes and restaurants with outdoor patios facing the park and river? We only have one downtown riverfront, and I think we're wasting the opportunity a bit in letting these resort style condos to go in there without them giving more consideration to how they affect the public realm. With the Peace Bridge right in front of the Platforms Shoes, what a fantastic opportunity to create a bit of more of a hub for the area....say with a park-side restaurant with a great outdoor patio.
East Village seems like it will have some of that more inclusive vibe at least.

This project totally boxes in the GWL site, that's part of the problem with it.

Updated renderings of Telus Sky, most noticeable is the black trim on the tower:

that would be a little too awesome for big bland Calgary. People would be scared of such an idea. They would look for any reason on why that would be impossible

no comparison between a single building in the core and developing an entire area near a really sensitive location like right along the river. I'd be fine if they allowed a strip of vendors with food carts, a patio set an allow them to sell beer. Very common scene around places like that in Europe. Makes for a nice evening out instead of being stuck indoors in some loud obnoxious bar or club.

It sounds like 3 Eau Claire (the funky two tower building connected up at the top) is dead in the water, reports this morning that the site has been turned back into a parking lot complete with pay machines.
