I really liked Berra as a person and a player.
He really seemed to enjoy being a flame and he played pretty well.
I could definitely see him turning into a solid #1 in a few years, thats why I am sad to see him go.
However, with Ramo, Ortio and Gillies we have some good potential there too and someone would have to be moved out eventually.
Getting a 2nd for Berra is good value but I could definitely see Berra "kipprusof'ing" us haha.

I think Berra does have the potential to become a no. 1 goalie. He reminds me of Hasek's first few years in Chicago; however, I don't know if he was even going to be re-signed by the Flames and there's no guarantee he would have developed here.
As weird as it sounds, the 2nd rounder is a safer asset than Berra.

I'm happy with the 2nd for Berra and 3rd for Stemp. In our situation there is nothing wrong with getting picks and trying to follow up last years solid draft effort with another one this year. Best thing the organization could do. Berra had flashes but really its a crapshoot with goalies at times and Ramo seems to be more consistent in his game while Ortio is making the organization think that he will need a shot sooner rather then later.

According to Joe Sakic, Berra is insurance if Giguere's back doesn't hold up and gives them options for future (sounds like they plan on re-signing Berra)

was this trade the start of a rift between Hartley and Burke??
Hartley seemed to really want Berra
Burke doing this just to show him....I like the way the team plays that you are coaching Bob....however your goalie ....meh not so much.

I like Berra and still think he has enough tools that if they can figure it out he could be a good starter. I never like seeing someone with potential get ditched, but I don't know how anyone can complain about the return. Ortio looked decent in his game, and he is at least in the same ball park potential wise.
We dealt from an area of strength and I hope we select a D-man with each of the picks we got today.

If Berra is going to turn into a stud goalie there is one huge difference between the Flames/Kipper and Colorado/Berra.
Flames never really had a very good #1 goalie, Colorado has Varlamov. Even if Colorado signs Berra after this season he isn't likely to see as many games as he would here which could slow his development.

According to some Avs fans Varlamov had similar problems to Berra before Franchois Allaire was hired, so maybe they think they can fix him?

Tank mode, nah, if someone offers you a 2nd for Berra, you take it, do up your zipper and leave the room while laughing.

If that's hardcore tank mode, then the Oilers trading away/waiving more of their already weak D for picks must be Self-Nuke mode.

No kidding. One day they are telling us that Berra and Ramo are junk and the next day after one is traded we are tanking. Which is it?

Unreal return, not hard to replace him with a 50-60 pick overall.

I actually see something in Berra too, but not enough to turn down a 2nd. Nice trade by Burke.

A second rounder? Au revoir, Berra.
Thanks for pumping up your trade value with those crazy OT and shootout wins.

I doubt that it was too premeditated. Colorado just really wanted an insurance goalie and was willing to pay a premium for one that is also pretty young (sounds like they want to consider re-signing him). A 2nd is a difficult offer to turn down.
I do think a lot of people under valued Berra here though. He was raw, but shows some pretty good flashes. He is still young enough for a goalie that those can be harnessed. When the trade happened, I honestly thought that a 2nd rounder would be the higher end of fair. I thought a 3rd was more likely, but am not too surprised to see him get more than that.

The year before Varlamov was traded he had a .924 save percentage. He then wasn't very good for the Avs for two years.
Varlamov is also younger than Berra is now.. let alone when he was traded.
