Love some of the reactions in here. We actually get great return for an asset (minor trade albeit) and half the posters are taking the OMG what do they know that we don't stance, we must have missed something.
Rediculous...........

Actually, if #Habs don't make the playoffs, #Flames got as much for just Reto Berra as #Isles got for Thomas Vanek.

Good deal to close out the deadline day for us..
Stempniak trade was a good one also..
This deal initially made me extremely surprised and happy. Then my next thought was I remember when Varlomov was traded I thought COL overpaid but he has turned out great..
But given we have Ramo, Ortio and Gillies I think this was a great deal...

I just assumed the Flames would let Berra walk for nothing this off-season. Didn't think he had any trade value. Nicely done.

Holy crap! Very pleased by the return for Berra.
The only downside, we will likely have to see Joey MacRebound for a few games...

Adam Proteau on the THN trade tracker:

Berra to the Avalanche for next to nothing

I'm pretty sure a 2nd rounder is better than next to nothing. Proteau must have seen it was a draft pick and assumed a 5th or 6th rounder like most of CP.

I don't know how you even try to compare Berra to Kipper, Kipper put up elite numbers in Europe then when he came over to the AHL he put up elite numbers there right away, he had a history of being an elite goaltender and was stuck on a team who had Nabokov and Toskala who were both putting up great numbers.
Berra's numbers have been mediocre, he comes over here and apparently "struggles" though I think that's just his talent level, Kipper came over and was dominate.
To me, it's two completely different situations and I will be shocked if Berra ever turns out to be anything more than a competent back up.

Bouwmeester trade effectively becomes Poirier, Corey Locke, a 2nd and 19 losses towards this years tank job

For all that people developed a major blind spot because he gave up the odd softie, the simple truth is, both Berra and Ramo have done yeoman's work keeping a pretty bad team in nearly every game it plays. Berra has potential. But with Ramo and Ortio, and a bunch of goalies on the FA market this summer, this is an easy trade to make.

Wonder if this is how Sharks fans felt when they received a 2nd round pick for their 3rd string goalie in 2003. Not that I'm saying Berra is going to turn out anything remotely like Kipper. Just funny how vastly different a fan's value of a player can be from an organization's value of a player.

The only downside is Joey MacDonald is coming back up. How long until Ramo is back?

Curious if Burke was actively shopping Berra.

Downside?
Bennett + Monahan in back to back drafts is a hell of a way to start a rebuild. Two top-tier centres in two years.
