the Plane lands in Buffalo, Halak gets off and gathers his luggage. He see's a guy in a suit with a Halak sign, its all covered in glitter and stuff.
Buffalo Rep - "Welcome to Buffalo Mr Halak, I work for the Sabres and I'm responsible for getting you settled in. If you'll come right this way we'll make our way to some transportation"
Halak - "Thanks I'm really excited to be here in Buffalo, and absolutely pumped to put on the errr Buffalo and crossed swords"
Both men stop by a doorway
Buffalo Rep - "Well here you are sir, I hope you enjoyed your stay"
Halak looks up at the sign over the door that reads "American Airlines flight to Washington.
The Buffalo Rep snickers as he runs off exclaiming - "I love my job"
Suddenly music starts to play over the Buffalo airport loud speakers

Every time the Sabres makes any noise, it's like a loud McDavid alert. It looks like a two horse race for that sweepstakes at the moment. Just wondering when the Flames are gonna join in an snatch that away.
I think Flames fans are going to have to make peace with the fact that we're not going to draft Ekblad or McDavid.
The Flames just cannot get that low. We just cant compete with teams like Edmonton or Buffalo for absolute dead last and nor should we. Getting the best player isnt worth the complete demolition of team morale and loss of willingness to win.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Next year, it's not just McDavid, there are 4 really good forwards at the top of the draft. All would easily be 1st this year, and arguably all would've been 1st or 2nd last year too.
As long as we are in that group next year, we'll get a very very good player, even if we miss out on McDavid.

The silver lining, if you can call it that, is that the Sabres are loaded with picks and top shelf prospects which they should be injecting into their lineup next year. The Flames will at best be treading water, and at worst replacing current roster players with below-average depth prospects. A lot can change, of course, but when considering the combination of current roster strength with prospect strength entering the system next season the Flames have to be the early favourite for McDavid.
tl;dr version: Sabres suck, but the future looks promising. The Flames suck now and for the foreseeable future.
