Yeah that's a great trade for Tampa. Remove a cancer, get a 1st in a stacked draft for a team that might slide and possibly something if they can flip Callahan quickly.

I love this deal for Tampa. They get a great player and leader for a playoff run, the chance to re-sign him and worst case scenerio another 2015 2nd when they flip his rights to a team that wants to talk to him prior to the deadline.
On top of that they get a 1st round pick in a very deep draft and another 2nd for this year.
They give up a great player but he was possibly a negative dressing room presence if he wanted out this bad. They could also turn around and flip callahan today for a downgrade offensively and another pick/prospect.

The timing of this is the worst part of the deal IMO. The East is so weak a team with St.Louis, Stamkos, Bishop and Hedman could definitely surprise Boston or Pittsburgh and make it to the cup final. Just bad timing.

Too bad he likely plays with his buddy Brad Richards.

Why do they need to win now? They have two elite players under 25 in Stamkos and Hedman, and an elite prospect (Drouin) knocking on the door.

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
More details: the 2nd-rounder in 2014 to Tampa becomes a 1st if NYR gets to conf final; if Callahan re-signs in TB (con'td)
Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
then NYR get TB 2nd in 2015 and TB gets Rangers 7th in 2015

That is very possibly 2 first rounders then.
I think the Rangers could easily be an Eastern Conference finalist.

So potentially Tampa could flip Callahan for assets, and end up with an extra first rounder in 2014 and 2015 if NYR somehow makes round 3?

Why are the Rangers so desperate that it could be two first rounders here? Oh yeah cause Glen Sather sucks.

Ya, NYR would really be a laughing stock for being one series away from the cup....

But at the same time if they make the conference finals they have a 1 in 4 chance of winning the Stanley Cup. I think any GM in the league would give up a 1st for those odds.

Yzerman could keep Callahan for their playoff run, or dump him and pick up a rental forward with better offensive numbers, leaving them in great shape for the playoffs with Stamkos coming back. Rental would be much cheaper than what they got for St. Louis/could get for Callahan. Great spot to be in.

Thank you. I hate the HFboards mentality some people here have where 1st round picks are more valuable than chances at the cup
Whats the point of this league again? To draft 18 year olds or win stanley? If the Rangers make the final then Yzerman looks like an idiot because he strengthed a conference rival

Pittsburgh yes, but Bishop would have to play like a Latvian goalie against Canada for Tampa to beat Boston. Certainly possible, but I wouldn't bet money on it.
Given the situation, Tampa made out like bandits. Would be nice if Duhatschek's speculation on them going after Cammalleri now would come to fruition.
